CA law ignorant

I knew CA was tough, but air filters and mufflers? Come on!

Maybe someone with CA knowledge can enlighten us, but I would think a muffler and or air filter would keep you legal. Isn't that why companys pay to have their parts C.A.R.B. certified?

induction 08-09-2002 02:03 PM

Yes , it's true air filters all the way to the mufflers. Just try and get a smog test here with anything mising or not replaced with the proper parts ha! man even a misrouted or broken vacume line can make you blow hot (fail) dont even think of removing the cat. most muffler shops wont touch it unless ther replacing it!

Ya gotta know someone that does the testing to pass the test if your car is modafied

P.S. I am in Southern California
Example : on my '65 it has a hose from the air cleaner to the pcv valve only the California cars had them ( not that it needs to be there now the car is exempt from smog so anything goes . but im fairly shur thats only up to 1972 or commercial .

89 Cobra LX 08-09-2002 02:20 PM

what a sucky deal

I really thought as long as it was C.A.R.B. certified you would be able to pass the inspection..... assuming you passed the sniffer part. Otherwise, these companies are wasting their time and money getting C.A.R.B. certification.

Thanks, Induction.

induction 08-09-2002 02:37 PM

I don't know all the rules but If it has a C.A.R.B. cert it may still only be approved for off road use only in California what a great state hua?! Not only must it pass the sniffer test it must also pass a visual test. Welcome to the Golden state ( its all about the cash):( PKRWUD is the carb guy im shur he can help us out with this.

CARB

Wouldn't the guy with the K&N have been legal if he had had the CARB sticker under the hood? I'm no expert on Ca. law, but I think that's how it goes. Check with PKRWUD on that,. I bet he knows.

I loved the explanation from the cop about suspension mods being illegal. "We have no way of knowing the quality of the after market part or the quality of the installation". Personally I doubt that many cops know much about suspensions at all.

I agree with you and I think if he had the sticker at all it was mixed in with all the rest stuck on the trunk or rear window .lol
As for the suspension mods thats just a runoff they use from the headlamp adjustment laws " if the headlamps are too low then the driver cant see correctly " so lets see what else is unsafe oooooooooooohhhhhhhhh the whole car sits too low that must mean he can't safely clear the reflectors in the road hummmm...... must be worn-out suspension parts or ect. ect. Now this car "cant be safe on my highway" =impound and fees paid to the city.

Do I sound bitter?

Yes, and I certainly don't blame you either. You know it'll just be a matter of time before all states copy those laws so the fuzz and courts can just hammer people at will about their cars. The usual plan is just to pass so many laws that almost everyone will be in violation of some of them. Then, when they want to, they can just go down a checklist until they find a violation or three or four. Then impoundment fees, towing fees, fines, storage fees, court costs, ad finitum.

Hey , MR 5 0 do ya have any info on this?

The Deuce 08-09-2002 05:08 PM

CA Smog

As far as I know, anything goes on my '72. Didn't have to get it smogged, car barerly runs, but can be tagged.

It is my understanding that anything south of the cats is not governed by the smog laws. There are "drive by" noise laws in CA, and you can in trouble for those. I know plenty of guys that run flows, and there is no problem changing the muffler.

As far as intake is concerned, there is the dreaded "visual inspection" This is where you get nailed for missing hoses, etc. They do not open the airbox to check what kind of filter is in there. So a K&N filter in itself is not going to get you into trouble.

More drastic mods, like heads, headers and CAI's are a gray area. They will pass the sniff test, but not always the visual. I hear there are ways to find people that won't bust you if you only fail the visual part, but I cannot be held to that statement, especially since my car is S-T-O-C-K.

If anyone has specific questions, please make it known you have them and attempt to get them answered via PM.

All I could say was poor Mustang. I thought it was hilarious. The guy spent $60,000 on a 320 horse v-tech. What a moron.

Mopar1 08-10-2002 01:44 PM

Guess it aint like it used to be. Would have liked to have seen some old muscle. A Vega with a v-8 chopped in it, would have brought back some memories.

The Fireman 08-10-2002 02:08 PM

All I had to say about that show was STUPID RICERS. Seeing that Mustang after it was hit didn't help much either.

For 60k he could of easily gotten a Vette and pumped it into the 10's in the 1/4  or even a ricer! But its still 320 hp?

Stang_Crazy 08-10-2002 10:17 PM

aww man, 320 hp?? Wow he's my idol  Did you see when he was at the hangout and everyone was checking his car out...he had his driving gloves on!!! Yep, he must need driving gloves to tame that beast. At least when it started HAHAHA :p

Stang Obsession 08-10-2002 11:15 PM

Hey guys..
Want to know something funny?! When I saw the previews for that show, it reminded me of the city I live in. I about died laughing. Most of my friends drive ricers and I can guarantee you that someone's going to be racing every night. However, I missed the show but from the sounds of it, it was no big loss?! :o

0h n0 5.0 08-11-2002 02:28 PM

StangFlyer 08-11-2002 03:37 PM
