Question time for new thermostat, what kind?

i hear all kinds of stuff about this thermo better than that one, and this one sucking compared to that one

i don't know what kind is in there, (only had the car a year) but my temp never goes above the first mark unless i nail 1st and 2nd, then it only goes to the second and drops back down

what kind should i get?

Not sure about brand, but stick with something stock if you don't have cooling problems. Nothing less than 180 degrees.

You should be able to. Talk to the parts guy to see if one brand is more accurate than others.

Question

Which is better for a basically stock 5-liter engine, 160 or 180* thermo? What is the difference?

I think for a mostly stock motor the 180 is the best choice. The difference is when it opens up to allow coolant to flow. Shouldnt go to a 160 unless cooling is a problem.
