Default I need cam advice for a 351w

I'm starting to buy parts for rebuilding my 351w that's in my '82GT
and I am debating what cam specs I will need.
This is my combo so far:

- Forged flat top pistons(.060)
- Edelbrock performer intake
- Carter 625 carb.
- Mallory electronic distributer
- BBK shorty headers w/ flowmaster exhaust
Most of the stuff I already have. I just bought the rebuild kit from Summit Racing last night.

I'll be runnig a C-4 tranny with a 2000 stall converter.
Depending on my cash flow, I will either keep my '69 heads and freshen them up or buy aftermarket heads.
It will be street/strip car.

I was thinking of Competition Cams 280* with .512 lift int/exh.
I want something that will work with what I have but I also want to hear a nice radical idle.
I also think about a duel pattern profile from Cran Cams with those similiar specs.
What do you guys think? Are those specs in the right ballpark for me?
I'm open for suggestions.

Default Question

Wondering why you are going .060" over - is that what it took to clean up? I ask because I have a block right now that is not perfect at .040" and the machinest said he would not go bigger on a Ford.

Yep, that's what it took. Someone had already rebuilt it in the past and went .030. The machine shop said he tried .040 and it was still "kinda rough" and took it .060
He said that the block is finished after this rebuild because .060 is the very max.
You can take yours to .060 too but the cylinder walls are getting thin at that point.
Anyhow, I heard .060 is the max.

Cool nervous about the 60 over

I wouldn't have gone that far,the 60 over is pushing it,as the cylinder bores are already thin the way it is,

As far as cam for your combination, the best thing to do,is call some manufacturers and get some reccomendations,if money is no problem,go custom grind.

the first 351w block i tried to use cut through the cylinder wall at .060 I'd think twice about using a windor block bored more than thirty or forty. I wish ya luck

I wouldn't worry about .60 over if it didn't go through then you are fine for a street setup. My street 351 is 60 over and a sleeve in one cylender and a 175 shot on it. It take the beating and asks for more. If you have the money I would get the conversion lifters with the tie bar (those lifters allow you to run any of the roller grinds for the fords not just the small base circle grinds like drilling and tapping to convert it) and run one of the trick flow cams probhaly the stage 2 by what it seams that you are stating.

Thats a good choice - I have a similar setup, but I went with the cam one series smaller; I would have liked the 280 for my application thinking back on it.
