Post WTF! Did anyone see Crank & Chrome???

Just wanted to throw this out there. I watched Crank & Chrome this weekend and they put headers, hi-flow cat, a big a$$ fart can, fuel pump and new injectors in an Acura Integra (I think that's what it was). I have watched this show several times and they have had some pretty sweet muscle cars. (including Mustangs) I could not believe some of the $hit they were saying.
Ex. This V-Tec is really a race motor in a street car!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then they both said they loved the sound of the exhaust. (fart pipe) They even sat there and revved it up a few times. WTF!!!!!!!!!!
Pretty soon they guy's will be wearing skirts on the show.
Sorry, I just had to vent.

oh boy,
Rice mania grows....

Is crank and chrome the show where you have these 2 guys that make it look like an engine rebuild takes 30 minutes and is a clean, dirt free job? or is that horsepower TV?

If its the same 2 guys I'm thinking of, it wouldn't surprise me, as I've seen them say things about a few domestics that were sometimes questionable and sometimes even downright stupid. I think its the same 2 that did mods on a 99 GT, spent 1500 dollars in parts and got like 15hp out of it....

Yeah, I came on to post about that crap when I saw that Mike Souslin had beat me to it. They were saying stuff like, "Man, these imports are race rockets right off the assembly line," and "The possibilities with an engine like this are infinite." Also, that the engine redlines at 8000, which apparantly is "twice what the new V8s can do." It was bull.

BTW, Hammer, it was Horsepower TV that did that hop up you're thinking of. They put flows, an x-pipe, a K&N, and a 70mm TB on a 99 GT and got 28 RWHP!!! Can that be, cause that would mean that the GT was making well over 300 at the crank, with just those minor mods.
Anyway, I like those shows, but making rice out to be in ANY way superior race cars to our muscle just gets me.

Well,
Uh oh, here I go magazine racing again:

The 99-00 GTs pump out 260HP at the crank stock. take out an average of 15% to the wheels and you have about 221 hp.
Add 28 to the RWHP total and you get 249 rwhp.
Adjust it to the crank output, and it comes out to a little under 295 hp at the crank.

Close to 300 hp, but not quite.

To be honest, I think the numbers are quite high compared to most results I've seen on similar cars with similar mods...

Well those shows are interesting, but really not worth the time to watch, cause all they every do is the basic stuff that any idiot should know. but the stupidest thing i saw them do, i think it was hp tv, was soop up a Chevy Astro van. they lowered it, and put some other bull sh*t on it, and called it good. They are just over payed morons who never get dirty.

In all fairness to those guys I think they have to show what's going on in all aspects of "racing" and car building. They probably have to talk up the mods they're doing to ricers for advertising dollars. If you look at what they own/drive I think you'll see where their heart is. They have an old custom truck, full size late model trucks, harley's, a mustang, etc. The other stuff is kind of like filler. It pays the bills.

I watched most of it, I was flipping between that and Championship Sumo Wrestling trying to figure out witch one was more interesting to watch. Ever notice all you see those guy's do is turn bolts or tighten hose clamps. I love this "When we come back we'll install the new part" then right after the commercial "Well we have the new part installed on are hot rod". I think what were not seeing is the qualified performance mechanic stut doubles during those commercials, you know the ones we seen during the last break.

Question

Can you guys educate me here? I saw the episode as well but didn't really give it too much passing interest. First, what is the big deal with an engine that's able to rev up to 8500 or 9000 rpms? Isn't it your powerband that matters? I don't mean to sound stupid but this confuses me a bit. Every car has peak horsepower and if for example your peak is at like 4200 rpm's - how does being able to rev to 7 or 8 do anything but hurt the engine? Second, and I know this point has been beat to death severely, but how do the big tip exhaust setups create power? Now on the show their setup came with a high flow cat and larger diameter pipes but how does a 5 inch tip do anything? It seems to me that it can't really do much good at the end of the system. I'm not trying to anger any import drivers here - the show just made me curious.

Sorry for the length of the post.

While revving to 7 or 8k rpm won't hurt an engine that's designed to run that way, you certainly don't want to stay in that area if your powerband is from 2 to 4k rpm...

"how does a 5 inch tip do anything?"

It doesn't. (other than to make an annoying sound) Just like on any other vehicle, a whole cat-back setup may help, and an upgrade from the headers back will certainly help.... but the tip does nothing...

A cat-back system is a major mod for them, For stangers, a cat-in-the-garbage system is the industry standard.

While there is no big deal for being able to rev an engine to 8500-9000 rpms when you peak power is at 4000. It is when your car hits peak power a 8500 and doesn't really make any power until 6000 rpms, which is what that engin you are talking about does - S2000
