Question

Can you guys educate me here? I saw the episode as well but didn't really give it too much passing interest. First, what is the big deal with an engine that's able to rev up to 8500 or 9000 rpms? Isn't it your powerband that matters? I don't mean to sound stupid but this confuses me a bit. Every car has peak horsepower and if for example your peak is at like 4200 rpm's - how does being able to rev to 7 or 8 do anything but hurt the engine? Second, and I know this point has been beat to death severely, but how do the big tip exhaust setups create power? Now on the show their setup came with a high flow cat and larger diameter pipes but how does a 5 inch tip do anything? It seems to me that it can't really do much good at the end of the system. I'm not trying to anger any import drivers here - the show just made me curious.

Sorry for the length of the post.
