Question Tire Question

I'm still running the stock rubber on my 00 GT, they're 17 by 8's. I want to put some wider tires on, for handling purposes, but I also want to get some drag radials out back (4.10's ). What are the widest tires I can run on the stock rims? Will 17x9's up front and 17x10's out back work? I'm thinking Nitto 555 up front and Nitto DR's out back. Will this setup help take off, and handling?

Question

Hmmm....I know that tire combination would definitely help alot. Especially the drag radials out back for traction. As far as the size I'm not sure. I know on a 17x8 rim 285s will fit. Our Lightning stock wheels (on the GEN 1s) are a 17x8 with a 275 width tire and some run a 285. Whether that will fit under a stang i'm not sure. Probably depends on the backspacing of the wheel. I know sometimes the wider tires have a tendency to rub the rear quad shocks of the mustang. I've never really looked into it in a while so i don't remember. Surely someone on here knows. You might post in the Blue Oval forum since it's kind of a general wheel question and see what you come up with.

96GTS are you sure about those tire sizes? I only ask because I was told that the widest tire I could run on my 17X8's is a 255.

A 245 tire is 9.6" wide
A 255 tire is 10" wide.
A 275 tire is 10.8" wide
A 285 tire is 11.2" wide

With a 8" rim and a 285 tire you have 3.2" of tire hanging over the edge of the rim.

I'm not an expert, or saying your wrong, I want to go wider on the back and I'm about to buy tires (in the next week or so) so If this is true, man I'll get the tires I WANT.

Thumbs up

http://www.svt.ford.com/flash/index.html

Go to that link and click on SVT archive at the top. Select one or all of the 93-94-95 Ls and then click View Specs. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see the wheel and tire size that came stock on the GEN 1 L. It's a 17x8 5 spoke cast aluminum with 275/60R17 Firestone Firehawk GTA's. Some guys run a 285/55R17 I believe it is. Then some of the more lowered Ls, they are lowered 1 inch already from the factory, run some sizes like 275/50R17, 275/45R17, and 275/40R17.
