Censorship?
You can't even say *** <-- (yep that is A-S-S) on here anymore? What the hell! Or should we say "Your car kicks tush!" ... Geez, WTF?

Hey, that's cool. Something weird, though. Before, when you would post a new message it would take you back to the original thread with your new message. Now it just shows the original thread without your message. Hmmm..
Also, instead of asterisks, could the word filter replace the word with its child-safe equivalent. **** to crap, *** to butt, **** to *******' http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif ------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |
I am strongly opposed to automated censorship. Who wrote the word list? Is this site geared toward 12 year olds? I censor my own language because I choose to. I find this a sad turn of affairs at Mustangworks...
Where can I find a list of the banned words so that I do not run afoul of the powers that be? another loss for freedom in america http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/frown.gif this is mainly a US messageboard, isn't it? |
Ok folks, listen up and chill out.
The board has always had the ability to auto censor whatever words I chose. In the past it was buggy, and so I didn't use it. Now, it seems to be fixed, and therefore I chose to turn it on. The main reason wasn't just that it was fixed, but because lately we've (the moderators) have had several problems with members using foul language. You should be aware that the use of foul language has always been against our policy. We wish to keep and maintain a fairly clean board. Yeah, once in a while, a minor expletive is warranted and everyone understands, but with the rash of problem posters lately I decided to crack down for a while with the automated system. We're about to crack down on the length of message board signatures too. These are also getting seriously out of hand. Allowing signatures wasn't intended to post every spec of your vehicle in. That's what the users rides is for, and you can easily post a short link to it directly from your signature. Why post 20 lines of car specs in every single message you post on the site for people to continuously wade through when the User's Rides is two click away. A reasonable signature length is about 4 lines. Look at mine for a good example. If it will make those of you who think we are being to strict on the rules happy, I will shorten the list of automatic censored words to the most offensive, however, I would ask that you understand my point of view in trying to maintain the quality site that everyone has come to know and love. ------------------ Dan McClain, Editor The Mustang Works Online 1991 Mustang GT - 10.90 @ 122 Mph Built, Blown, and Fast as Hell! |
This is crazy! I can't believe just because a few people decided to get really nasty you guys go and turn on the "censorship button" (a.k.a Freedom Revoker). Has anyone seen the South Park Movie? Remeber the song that the counselor sung? Instead of ass say butt, instead of **** say poop! and instead of **** say m'kay cuz that the worse word you can say! LOL! This is gay... we're all adults in here, we all say these bad words every time we work on our cars, and if you never said a bad word, you probably never picked up a wrench before. Turn this crap off. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...gboard/mad.gif

I also think that everything has to be to "politically correct" nowadays. Geez, since when did racing become politically correct. This is "Poop"

you do not need to do this.
if someone is out of hand, warn them to behave. If they don't, ban their IP and every Ip they log in from. This is wrong... I got myself banned from stangnet because of the very same issue. I really like this place. I don't want to find another Mustang board... [This message has been edited by Snakeman (edited 01-11-2000).] |
tra9379:
Sorry you take this so personally and I'm kind of surprised that anyone is so offended by the fact that swearing and cursing is not permitted on a pubic messageboard. As Dan stated, this has always been a firm rule here and as new members come aboard (almost 7000 now) we have to restate it. Frankly, I don't see why anyone can't express themself without adding curses and generally dirty language to what they have to say. Does anyone really believe that using foul language makes your message better or you look more intelligent? I doubt it. Sure, we all know the words. So what? Do you curse and swear every time you open your mouth in public? I seriously doubt it. Foul langauge is simply unnecessary and doesn't add anything to messages or replies to messages. It has nothing to do with "PC" or kids or freedom of expression (pleeease). It has everything to do with running a clean board where anyone can express themself within the bounds of reasonable good taste. The growth and national recognition of this site (and it's boards) validates that running boards that don't allow egregious cursing are far preferable to boards where anything goes. The fact that Dan reactivated the censor feature simply makes things easier for the moderators but has the same effect as cleaning up messages with foul language manually. Everytime I've done that (edited curse words) I e-mailed the person who posted it and they almost always replied with an apology. This is why I'm surprised at the (small) negative reaction to not allowing foul language but be that as it may, Dan sets the policy, the moderators agree with it and so it shall remain. I think it's reasonable and ask that you and others who now object will make the simple adjustment to omitting the foul language from your posts. It's easy and it would be appreciated. Thanks. - |
I am absolutely opposed to censorship of any kind on the internet where the government tries to step in to regulate content. Let's get that out of the way.
The internet is kind of like a roadway where we get from house to house. This web site is Dan's house. If he doesn't want us using foul language, that's his right. We're his guests. If we don't like being censored, we don't have to go to his web site. It's that simple. Since I don't need to use obscenities to communicate, I will continue to use Dan's web site as long as he allows me to use it. My comments regarding the alternative words were tongue-in-cheek. I agree that a-s-s isn't really an obsenity in my book. I doubt it is in Dan's, too. |
Why are people making this such a big deal!!!! So what you can't swear on the messageboards, who cares!!!!!!!!!!!! You would think with all the good info this board has given people that something like this would be fine.

ALRIGHT PEOPLE, LISTEN UP
So far Dan and his moderators have done a fabulous job with this site. I am against censorship on the internet, but this is my exception. I swear, everyday in public, but I know I have a foul mouth. I used to use the same language on this site, until Mr. 5.0 edited my post and told me hwo offensove it was. BOTTOM LINE: Swearing makes you look stupid. Not only that, your post will loose its potency. Rob, I read the majority of your posts, and occasionally I see you swear....NO BIG DEAL. I don't get offended. Its the peoplewho put several swear words in their posts, ie F-this F-that, you can suck my $%!#. That is the type of language I do not want to see on a PROFESSIONAL board. I do not want to see you leave this site because of the censorship. Evidently the moderators have warned people about their language, and it is STILL getting out of hand. Could it be that we have had people from Stangnet come here, because Stangnet has VERY strict rules? That is a major possibility. This is the best mustang site on the Internet, and they will keep it that way. Please bare with them until the language dies down. You can still get your point across by bleeping out 1 or 2 letters. In my book thats okay...I don't know how Dan or everyone else feels. I agree with the signature length also. I've seen it alot and seen Mr.5.0 mention it but people still have it, its ridiculous. Now if we could just shortin some of his post, Heeh, J/K. Cussing? I have no problem with it one way or the other. I think its funny, damn **** , Hehehe. I've been meaning to change my signature and think I'll do it now while I'm thinking of it.

Well, I was going to post my opinion but Mr. 5.0 beat me to it again(not kissing yer rear, Mr. 5.0 but it's true). I don't quite understand why any of you guys feel the need to swear to enhance your post. You can say what you need to say just fine without any obscenities. And as for govenment cansorship, guess what? This is DAN'S BOARD, NOT YOURS!! It's just like going to the track and getting kicked out for not having a seatbelt or rollbar or driveshaft loop, etc. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT AND ARE GOING TO WHINE, THEN LIVE WITH IT OR GET OUT! Those of you that feel the need to swear in each and every post, go to Musclestangs where all they do is swear and spend most of their time ripping other people apart who just need some answers. If that's the kind of trade-off you want so you can swear, then fine.

not to blow anyone's horn here but there is no need to express yourself in the language of jerks. i feel bad cause i don't capitalize. thats just laziness. this is a fantastic website and the recent exchanges on political issues proves it; serious and intelligent conversation about non-automotive concepts is a refreshing idea and it shows the character of most people who visit this site. i don't have a signature because my car is nothing special. i come onto this site to help others and discuss issues relating to automotive concerns as well as other things. i know how it is when your car breaks and it seems like no one cares; its scary sometimes. we're all here to help each other for that reason, i hope. so lay off Dan, he is not here to babysit. this is the only place on the net that i can find intelligent conversation and i relish in it. keep up the good work guys.
