Post Search Problems

I have tried searching for posts by registered user and I don't get anything back. Am I doing something wrong?
Also, when I use the main search engine and look for something like "spark plugs" (commonly discussed subject), and set it for match any terms; late model tech; entire message; and any date and I get some back from June with no links to the message, and some back from September. I get none for July and August or any preceeding months. Again, am I doing something wrong here too?
Thanks for your help.

This is because I have to chop the datafile down that contains an index of all the message on the system from time to time. I must do this because there are so many message and this file gets so big, that the server side CGI application for the msgboard runs out of memory when it trys to load it. This is the only solution at this time.

I am currently working on an additional server, as even our big server we upgraded to back in April is now have performance problems at peak times of the day for traffic. We receive 300,000 hits a day! And, the most popular thing on the site is the message board. It's not uncommon to see nearly 150 concurrent copies of the CGI modules that run the board running during the mid-day peek time. That's a HUGE CPU load, even for an Ultra server.
