Well I'll explain it this way:

When you go to the site and start to browse, you are considered a GUEST until you login through a post. Also I would assume most of the members do not have the cookies enabled to save their username and password.

Even though the site, "remembers you" and the last time you logged on....all it saves is the last time you visited.... not really who you are and what posts you have read. So it marks all the new posts and posts with new replies SINCE you left as unread.
