02 Gt or 02 Z28..that is the question.

Hi,I'm Nick and I currently own a 97 Cav Z24. in a few months i'll be buying a new car and I was considering buying a 02 GT or a 02 Z28.I would like your input on my decision before I buy my car.I have asked the same question on a Camaro board and I will have their side of it too. Why should I buy a GT over a Z28 ?? Why should I not buy a Z28 over a GT? Thanks for you help...

Nick

Hmmmm... this is hard. You're in a Mustang forum and I've been driving a GT for at least the past 12 years. Obviously, most on this site are probably going to tell you to go with the Ford.

I've been shopping with a friend of mine for his new wheels and he's looking into the Z28 too. As I've told him, if you're gonna do it, go "whole hog" and get the damn SS.

My brothers are both GM guys; one drives a 99 SS and the other the 10th Anniv FireHawk. They are both very sweet cars but I love my GT just as well.

In all honesty, if you like the "Z" I'd say go for it! GM is stopping the Camaro, Bird & Hawk after 2002. Would be good to get your hands on the last one. They'll come back but when they do they won't be the same. And again, if you're going to do it, get the SS! Just don't get the 35th Anniv Camaro - it's ugly!

If you haven't already, check out SLPENG.COM. It's a pretty good GM forum. If you get the Camaro, make sure to get some of SLP's mods on it.

Good Luck and let us know what you decide!

To be honest it really has to be the one you like the most. I find it a whole lot easier to work on Mustangs then on Camaros. I work on cars every day, and I see more problems on a Z with 10,000 miles than with a Stang with 50,000 on the clock. Ford has come a long way with the GT in recent years. Better handling, more horsepower, and all around a better car then a Z or TransAm. There are many people in this forum that have kick A$$ GT and they will tell you the same. And before I would spend the extra cash on an SS, I would put a blower on the GT. Or by a Cobra. In my opinion the sound of GT or Cobra is by far the best of all the sport's cars out there. Well good luck.

You may not even have the chance to buy a 2002 Camaro since they aren't going to make them anymore.

If you ask this question on a Camaro board or a Mustang board your going to get baised opinions. Best thing to do is go to the local dealerships and test drive both, a Z28, SS, GT, Cobra.

I asked a similair question two years ago except I was looking at the WS6/GT/Cobras. In the end I test drove each and bought my GT and have never looked back.

I agree with Mustang92 get a test drive under your belt and ask fit and finish and recall questions to get a complete picture.

Otherwise, all we can do is extol on the virutes of being a Mustanger and not a GMer. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

The Mustang has a huge fan base and a future.
Something to think about.

thanks everyone for your reply's. I already test drove my friends 01 Gt 5 speed and I like it alot. Good handling, lotsss of power(compared to my Z24 hehehe ) and I really really like the overall look of it, better then the Z28. I just need to test drive a Z28 to compare it. But by what other people have told me, the Z28 eats the Gt big time in a race. what are the quarter miles time for the two? By what i saw and heard the Z28 can get from high 12's to mid 13's and the GT from high 13's to mid 14's. So that means a second faster, is that a really big difference?

A few things to consider:

I'm not saying it's never happened, but I have NEVER seen a bone stock LS1 (down to the air filter and tires) pull a 12 second time slip.... and I frequent the track a lot... I have seen some consistant low 13s from some stockers, but never a 12...

I have also seen a bone stock 99-01 GT (down to air filter and tires) pull 13.9s consistantly.

I would say from the average of my experience, a bone stock LS1 is about .5-.7 seconds faster in the quarter than a stock GT...

The original question, is a second in the quarter mile or not.... its a bigger difference than you think...

As far as the question of what to buy...
Well I agree with the folks above. Test drive em all and see what you like.

A couple things to remember:

1. The stang has a bright future, the LS1?
2. There's already a large aftermarket for the 4.6, and its getting larger everyday...
3. While there are some issues, overall the 4.6 is a VERY reliable engine and the quality of the car is better than the camaro (in my opinion)
4. The GT's cheaper...
(You might even be able to buy a blower in the cost difference...)

The statements above are MY opinion only... so take them with agrain of salt... http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/wink.gif

hey hammer (or someone else)

what engine is the most reliable the Ls1 or the 4.6 ? reliable meaning which can take the most abuse ? because you could say that i'm pretty hard on engines..

Here are some issues durability wise to look at...

LS1
*Weak rear end.
*Weak clutch (99-00's can barely handle drag radials without slipping, get an A4).
*Miss a gear or over rev and bend a push rod.

4.6
*Weak trans.
*Weak IRS(Cobra only) (Couldn't handle very much abuse at the track).
*Throw out bearing was a problem on the 99/00's, seems to be fixed on 01's.
*Carrier bearings in the rear end fail quick on the 99-00's.

I went through this same dilemma back in December. Obviously I bought the GT. The reasoning came down to a few main points. I found the GT to be a lot more comfortable to drive. Also, for the price it was a no brainer. When it came down to it, I negotiated on a Z28 and GT, I could get the GT, Supercharge it and put a stereo in it, and still have cash left over or I could get a pretty stock Z28. Now the last supercharged 2000 GT I saw would chew up a Z28 and spit it out, so I decided the GT made more sense. Now I just have to suck it up and buy the charger.....

Why not spend a few extra thousand dollars on a Cobra or SS?If u want raw power go with the Camaro but the mustang is more comfortable and from wat i've experienced the mustang has better handling.it's dead even up to about 60 mph then it's all camaro.I don'thave any times for the 2002 gt or z28 but here's some for the 01 cobra and ss.
SS
-Quarter mile-13.9@105.5
0-40mph-3.3sec
0-60mph-5.5sec
0-80mph-8.7sec
0-100mph-13.2sec
-200ft skidpad-
.87g
-700ft slalom-
60.0 mph

Cobra
-Quarter mile-
14.1@101.5

0-40mph-3.1sec
0-60mph-5.5sec
0-80mph-9.2sec
0-100mph-13.6sec

-200ft skidpad-
0.85g
-700ft slalom-
64.5mph

Also the camaro gets slightly better fuel mileage.i would get the mustang but of course,i own one.
