01 GT Stock Info
Hello All,
I have 2001 GT and I'm not too sure of a few things. My car is all stock except for a K&N air filter. I was wondering if someone could tell me what the stock gear ratio is on my Stang and what type of transmission (what model) it comes with(it's a manual). Also, is there a name for the shifter or is it just Ford stock. I'm thinking of going with the Pro. 5.0 soon. Also, I am looking to get some Eibach springs maybe but I'm not sure how much I should I should drop it. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The stock gear ratio is 3.25:1. As for the tranny, its the same old same old 5 speed tranny ford has used for years. The shifter is nothing special. Just a stock shifter. No specific name. As for springs. Sprint makes a set of lowering springs which will drop the car about 2" using the factory shocks and struts. They run a couple hundred and you can find them at www.mustangworld.com along with some other cool sh*t. You dont even need caster camber plates or anything else.

Well...
Is that same old Tranny a T5 or something else? What do you think about 3.55 gears and a Pro 5.0 for my next mods? Also, I noticed you have a cold air induction, how do you like that?

I have a 2002 GT M5 and I may be wrong but if I remember right it has the tremec 3650. It's late and I'm tired, so I may be way off. I think that they changed the transmission in 2002 or 2001. Not sure which though. Going from 3.25 to 3.55 won't be much of a difference for the amount of money your paying, I'm going to slap some 3.73's in soon on mine. 4.10 is too extreme and 3.55 isn't enough, I like it right in the middle. Just a thought. You also might want to look into the STeeda Tri Ax shifter if oyu haven't already, I think it has a little more comfortable position.

Yes, it is the T-5 tranny in the basic GT. The tremec, as I believe, is used in the Saleen, Steeda, and Cobra's, Usually a 6 speed. However the for Saleen it's just an option, not standard. For the rear end gears, go with 3.73's. Like mlambrecht said, 3.55 aint worth it, and 4.10's are too much for a daily/highway driver. The Tri ax shifter is a must if your gonna run it. Shorter throws and sprig loaded to third gear (the most commonly missed gear when racing). Enjoy!

Okay lots of misinformation here. For starters all 99+ GT's come with 3.27's, 3.25's aren't even a gear made for the 8.8 rear end. 3.55 gears are going to be a complete waste of time. 4.10's would be a much better choice unless you have plans for a power adder in which case 3.73's might be a better selection. 4.30's are an extreme gear that is what I use on my car and mine is a daily driver that has 94K miles and sees the freeway daily. 4.10's are to 4.6 motors what 3.73's where to the 5.0 guys.
Your stock transmission is the tremec 3650 not a T-5. T-5's have not been available since 1995. From 1996 all 4.6 mod motors came with T-45 which was made by Borg Warner then sometime in 98 Tremec bought them out and started to make the parts for the T-45's including cases. The T-45 came in Mustangs until 2001 which is when they went to the 3650. Some T-45's (such as mine) are stamped tremec but are really the same Borg Warner design. Overall there really is no difference between the T-45 and 3650 other than shifter. As for shifters UPR gets my vote, very similair design to Steeda, cheaper and made from a higher tensile strength aluminum. Had mine for nearly 3 years and no problems. Bill

Well F me runnin. One of the few parts on the car I don't know personally is my tranny, since I havent broken into it yet. So, sorry for the mis-information as to what type it is. Just repeatin what I was told. Anyway, he is adding a power adder,IE: supercharger, and in your case mlambrecht, I dont know how you can drive everyday with that extreme gear. Personally, the 3.73's work just fine for my liking with the 4.6L. I noticed 3rd gear to feel stronger with them.

I think your talking about Mustang92's 4.30's
My gears are stock now, but when I do change them I will deffinately go with 3.73's. Unless I get a 6 speed first, then I might go with 4.10's. |

Damn, 0-2 on this post I think its a good choice, but once you make your decision, make it based on thats what your gonna do now or in the future. Hate to see you waste money getting all that work done then doing it all over.

Thanks...
Thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate the information. You guys know your stuff and I have to say I'm catching on quick myself. This is good because you are even clearing up some issues of your own! I know now that my gears are 3.27's and that 3.55s may be a wate of time and money so I'm better off with the 3.73's. I am still on the fence however regarding the Pro 5.0 versus the Steeda Tri Ax(which I do not know much about). Do any of you guys have input on lowering springs. I'm a daily driver in Mass (lots of shitty roads) and the roads aren't quite like they are out in Cali and down in Florida but I'd like to drop it some. Thanks.

The TR-3650 is a completely different transmission than the T-45. TTC, who already owned Tremec, allowed Tremect to aquire the rights to the Borg Warner Transmission lines. The 2001 Mustang's came with both the T-45, and the TR-3650, depending on build date.
Mustang92 : Something doesn't add up. If you do to the math, the gearing would favor 2nd gear and 3.27s more than 4th gear and 4.30s .

according to fordvehicles.com the 2003 mustang (V6, V6 vert, GT, GT vert) ALL came with 3:27s...but the new 2003 comes with 3:55s...mine's a 2002 and it's got 3:27s too...so id assume at least 99+ are all 3:27s...

mlambrecht82, I finish in 4th gear around 5800.
tireburner163, my car has more work done it to now than when I had 3.27's so I'm going more on feel. Crazy Horse GT, 100% sure they are 3.27's but you can verify it by looking at the tag on the rear end. It has the factory install gear ratio stamped on it. jj_jonathon, I think you mean the new 2003 Mach I has 3.55's. GT's still come with the same rear end gear. 2003 Cobra's also come with the 3.55's. Bill
