Default 1996 Engine Swap

I have '96 Mustang with a blown engine. I'm looking for a used replacement. Does anyone know exactly which year engines would be a direct swap? In other words no need to change harness, computer, etc.
If I were to get a newer engine what else would I need to get to make the swap work?

What engine do you have now? I would imagine the same size engine from 96-98. I know the heads changed on the 4.6 in 99, which were better heads and are, from what I hear, a hot performance swap onto the earlier 4.6's. Im sure if you just head down to the salvage yard they'll get ya hooked up right.

It's a 4.6 sohc stock motor. I asked the question because there are several 1999-2003 motors out there (ebay, etc) that a relatively cheap, but I don't want to pick up one these 4.6 PI motors if I need to change the computer and harness. I want to keep costs down if I can. Right now I just want to get the car back on the road.
My calls to local yards etc haven't given me any real answers. When they tell it should work they don't sound too confident.

You can put a 99-04 2v motor in the car without changin the harness. Heck, I know a guy who put an 01 Cobra motor in his 96 and didn't change the eletrcial. If you find a long block, (pan to intake and accessories) from any 2v motor you can run the coilpacks. You might need a custom tune, but you won't need to rewire anything.
