Unless your '96 is modded enough that your power curve has been moved up in the rev range, 3.73's are the best gear for you. The reason alot of people recommend 4.10s in '99+ GT's is that they make peak power at higher rpms than a 96-98.
As for calculating what your rpms will be, it's a simple ratio. Just look at what your rpms are now at a given speed and multiply that by the new gear ratio divided by the old ratio. For example:
2500rpm x (3.73/3.27) = new rpm at given speed.
