Get some underdrive pulleys, a C&L 80mm MAF, and some drag radials.

What is it with Cold Air Kit mania these days?

The marketing guys for these products have certainly earned their money.....

Get a shifter if you're using a 5 speed, underdrive pulleys, MAF and some drag radials

Screw the CAI...pull of the silencer and let that K&N breathe....pulleys and a 80mm MAF would be good.....If you're going to go to the track a lot...I too would recommend the drag radials

I assume the same holds true for a 96, but I know 98s you acutally can lose a HP or two from just removing the silencer.

Granted, I think it sounds much better without it, but don't expect a gain. I think the removing silencer idea goes back to the early 90s 5.0 days when it was a problem. The Modular Mustangs (again not totally sure about the 96), had their silencers designed to have good air flow.

I would recommend getting a K&N filter though. You will actually save money because you won't have to replace those paper filters all the time.

I would say go for pulleys (if you don't have a large stereo system), shifter, new MAF (people seem to like them, don't know much about gains on a stock modular engine though), and don't forget suspension. Many suspension mods can cut time and make your car more fun to drive. Traction bars or lower control arms are some favorites for drag-racing (if that is what u are going for). Also, a good tune-up and advancing the timing are always helpful to start out with.

Thanks,

I agree that the biggest bang for your buck at this point would be pulleys and drag radials if you go to the track. Shifter is a definite must. Suspension is a good think to mod, but be careful because certain suspension mods may actually hurt drag times if that's what you're going for (springs for one).

Don't the 96 GTs come stock with 80mm? Just curious, because I am in the same boat. I have a 96 GT Vert w/Flowmasters 2 baffle. Bought CAI a few days ago...but haven't opened box..sounds like a thank god by reading your comments here.

The C&L has no backflow inhibitor, lets the maf flow up to 900 CFMs instead of 680 CFMs.
