Never ever ever use radiator drain plugs. Just unclamp the lower hose and drain. After you strip out, or break a few, the hose will make more sense.

got everything hooked up fine.. me and my brother worked on it from 3:30 to 10pm, on thursday. thats with a 1 hour break for friends and dinner . then for an hour or two we worked on trying to tune the carb, we are still stuck trying to tune it...
my car will run, just not real well, we havent yet gotten it to idle correctly, and all settings it will backfire through the carb.... the timing is fine, everything ignition related is just fine, unless u guys can think of something else. when i get the carb tuned correctly (holley 600cfm vacuum secondaries, electric choke) i think im gunna blow up my mufflers because its just flowing more than these 2 inch pipes can stand... no prob cause im gunna order headers soon then get a new exhaust system. by the way, i dont think my choke is working at all....... it wont move by itself, and its hooked up and everything.... we really need help tuning all the carburator, but theres only so much that u guys can do typing online. thanks for your input! Tom

You have a blown power valve in your carb.

no actually, i think its the vacuum advance is getting WAY too much vaccuum, over advancing on rev's. Causeing the spark to go off when the intake valve is opening. Im going to hook up the vactory vacuum delayers, to slow down that advancment.
After i set the timing (it was WAY too far advanced before) it wasnt backfiring NEARLY as much at all, no flames, just a barking or coughing noise (opposed to the previous 2 foot high fireball with a loud bang). How many vacuum ports are on the holley? thers one on the passenger side metering block that i have plugged off, theres one under the front fuel bowl wich im using, and theres one in the back, pointing to the passenger side for the crank case ventalation that i have hooked up properly. Are there any others that i havent seen? Thanks

well i got it idling really well, and its revving up without popping... just dunno how reliable it will be if i actually drive it.... its only running well when theres NO vacuum to the distributor advance can... nothing hooked up it runs great... anything hooked up and timing adjusted it runs like crap and backfires all the time.
i have the mixture screws out about 3/4 turn each, so it should be running pretty lean, and its been getting best results like this... its idling in neutral at 900 to 1100 rpm, choke open and warm. That should be pretty good. i just dont understand why it runs so much better with no vacuum advance hooked up... I suppose it would be easier for me with a mechanical advance distributor.... i hope the powervalve isnt blown, if it is i hear its a pretty simple fix. Just a gasket. Do any of you guys know of where and what are all the vacuum ports on the holley carb , as i asked in my previous post? And wehre on the carburator can i find a part number or something that will enable me to identify exactly how old the carb is and its origional specs? Thanks

vacuum ports
Well, the port on the back of the carb is for the pcv system. The port in the front gets constant vacuum and is generally not the place to hook up your advance. The port on the metering plate (passenger side) only sees a vacuum when the car is under load. This is the port you want to use for your distributor. Plug the front one. And like PKRWUD mentioned,..you might also have a blown powervalve, but try switching ports first. good luck.

Well, my car is all dialed in and running great!!!!! With some help from the local Engine Guru (happens to be my friend's dad ). I paid him with a 30 pack of coors, GOOD INVESTMENT! It took him about 5 minutes to make my car run like a champ, only thing now is i need some new spark plugs cause these ones are fowling all over at high rpm.. im not gettin a complete burn.
Looks like im gunna have to get that MSD 6A ignition before the headers. Overall driveability is great with this carb! And no the powervalve was never blown, it has powervalve blowout protection. I have to let on the pedal evenly iwth the rpms, and be fully open at about 3000rpm and up , if i push it all the way at like 1500 its a little too much gas, but it still makes its way up, just a little bit slower. Once i have headers and my new exhaust, it oughta flow much better and run faster. Normal cruising is way quicker, 1/4 throttle feels like 2/3 throttle on the origional carb. Where i was doing 35mph with the old carb and manifold, im doing about 55, so i gotta be a little carefull ehehhehehehehehe. thanks for all your help guys, and i will have pics of it all in a couple days!
