Default Bottom end dead after 45K

Well, my engine developed a horrible knock from the bottom end last week and Ford is recommending replacing the engine since they don't do overhauls. I just don't understand what caused it - I have never overheated it, over-revved it, or let it get low on oil. Has anyone else had a failure like this with that little mileage?
