2001 GT - best starter mods?
Hello all I just traded my 97 GT Conv for a 2001 GT Conv, and am interested in learning about modifications to start with. Logically, it would seem that starting off with adding a supercharger or a turbo kit, or anything similar, is not the best idea. I say 'logically' because I assume there would be issues in jumping from stock to over 350+ HP without knowing if the underlying system can handle it. So what are some good starter modifications that will improve performance to the car, while slowly letting me build toward an overall goal of 350+ HP? (i just pull the 350 number out of air BTW) I was damn tempted to buy a 2001 Cobra from the same lot, but they wouldn't give me the deal I wanted on it, and it wasn't my first choice of color. Thanks! |

Your best bang for the buck would have to be a gear swap. If you have a 5-speed go for 3.73's. If you have an auto go for 4.10's. The gears will run you about $200 and installation will be another $200.

No offense, Mustangbob, but I'd sure pass on the 3.73s and go with 4.10s or 4.30s in the stick car. I got 4.10s and now I wish I'd gotten 4.30s. You won't have any driveability problems with the 4.10s (almost no difference in fuel economy) and the performance difference will be pretty eye-opening. Get the FRPP gears from Gene Evans Ford in Georgia for $150. If you've got a stick car, I'd replace the stock shifter before getting the gears.

Sorry Bush, but I'm going to have to agree with Bob on this one...
If its a stick and daily driven with both stop and go and highway use, I'd go 3.73s... Some AODE guys go with 4.10s though... Its certainly a matter of taste though... as long as you keep in mind the mild effects on gas mileage and top end speed between the 2 ratios, its a matter of taste. But my opinion is 3.73's... ------------------ Adam "Hammer" Packett: Moderator, Gulf War Veteran GO GET 'EM BOYS! [This message has been edited by Hammer (edited 10-10-2001).] |

More or less personal preference, if you use the car just to go to local ''cruise in'' spots and commute in the city then I would opt for the 4.10's maybe 4.30's but if you're takin the car on road trips and what not I'd definately go with 3.73's. Whatever gear you get will definately be an improvement over the 3.27's
