![]() hello, I am thinking about buying an early 90's Mustang 5.0. I am on a limited budget. My husband has an 86 camaro with a built 350 and my goal is to get a car that will out run him in a 1/4 mi., he dislikes Mustangs, so that would just make it all the better! His car should be in the low 14 sec. range. What would I have to do with a Mustang to beat him? He thinks I should just get another camaro so that "I have a chance". How fast are these Mustangs stock and what would I have to do?
I am not an "experienced driver" but I have had a few races myself. Would it be easier for me to drive the auto or manual. Please help I need to shut him up. Thanks, Jen. |

![]() I would buy a 90-93 mustang GT...Prob run you about 4-6 thousand for a nice one. Throw on a set of gears and it would be a close race. Just for extra, throw on a bigger MAF, TB, and a set of underdrive pulleys and exhaust system....

![]() Jen, Smokedawg is right. I would look for a '87-'92 5.0 LX or GT. these cars came from the factory with forged pistons. Try to find out what your husband's Camaro ran at the track and go from there. Check your local classifieds and the used car lots for a good running 5.0. Before you purchase the car, have a mechanic check it out. Pay him or her to do a compression test and overall checkup. You can answer the "auto or stick" question yourself. Which one are you the most comfortable with? There's got to be a few Performance shops up in Oregon. Find one that's does good work and tell them what your plans are for the car. Also ask as many questions as possible about your Mustang. Keep us up to date on how you are making out. GOOD LUCK, Jen!

![]() Smokedawg and Nitrous Al are both right, it doesn't take much to beat a pre 93 Camaro or Trans AM. My brother has had 2 Trans AMs with 350's in them, I have even had one myself and they aren't that fast. He had an 86 GTA and we built up a monster motor for it, tranny work, gears, exhuast and suspension work. The car still only ran 12's. My buddies '88 Mustang GT with only suspension work exhaust and gears would always keep up with it! Camaros are much heavier than Stangs so unless your husbands Camaro runs less than 13's then you should be able to beat him with just minor work.

![]() 86 camaro with a built 350 need a bit more Info on it is it a 550HP 14:1 motor or a like 9:1 with like 350Hp Most of the time a stang with heads Intake and gears plus a few other mods will be beating most cars out there.

![]() I agree, I dropped 1/2 a sec with sticky tires, and im running granny higway gears....sorry to get off the subject, but 1bad89 is right i think, the stock upper plennum has a 60mm opening, a bigger tb and spacer wont match the intake anyways without some porting on the intake?? correct?
im still buying a 65mm tb just because i need a new one, but i expect no gain, hey 1bad, what if i gewt an explore intk and tb, along with a 73mm maf? good luck melmo.....

![]() Coupe5oh, I would buy a 70mm TB, unless you find a good deal on a 65mm. The reasoning behind that is, most aftermarket intakes have a 70mm opening, and a 70mm TB is said to be good to up to 650hp. Either one you buy 65mm or 70mm you'll most likely not feel a difference between. If you have the stock intake, don't buy another Throttle Body unless you plan on porting the intake opening to match, otherwise your going to have a gap in between the two when they are bolted up.

![]() All of the dyno's I have read and seen have proven the 70's to actualy lose a little or break even to the 65's on anything not ported out the butt or blown/gassed. Personally I lost 3 lbs or torque, but gained 2 hp with the upgrade.........

![]() MM&FF has done a few articles, between the 65mm and the 70mm TB, and at like heads/cam stage, they didn't lose or pick up anything.
