Can some one please explain...

...crate motors? Differences of a crate motor and a shortblock and such? Thanks guys, this has been bugging me.

Crate is a generic term to mean a brand new block you order form somewhere. You can get either a short block or a long block. My understanding of that difference is a long block comes with heads.

Soooo, theoretically, if I see "514 ford crate motor"... is it assumed that since it is Ford built, that it would fit in a 99+ Mustang? Just wondering, I'm too happy with my motor now to do anything, but just wondering.

You can make anything fit in there if you throw enough money at it. The 514 is a stroked (?) 460, if I'm not mistaken. There should be enough room in there, since I know you can make a 460 fit in the fox bodies. If you really want some power, pull your blower back off and slap it on the triton v-10. I've seen that dropped into a 96-98 body, and that was n/a I can't imagine an F/I car like that. I think I just found your next project. ;)

i dont mean to be a "flamer" here, but you have 450 some odd rwhp and you dont know what a crate motor is?

Rice Hunter 11-12-2002 11:49 PM

Just never explained to me.. heard it lots of times, never got around to asking. I don't do my work on my car... I was a full time student headed for med school. It originally started off as a project with my dad. I confess that I don't know too much about working on motors. But I really could give 2 sh*ts if you flame me, I don't even know you... it is the internet.

You'd be surprised what some people don't know. I've never bled a brake system or set timing with a light. I've done more brake jobs than I can remember and pulled a few distributors though. How does that work? I cheat, because no one has ever shown me how to do those two things.

Creepy, eh?
