Cobra Heads???

Ok so I have a question, I hear about head changes on the 96-98 mustang GT's to the 99-01 heads with minor work can pick up between 45-60 horsepower, what about a cobra head swap? I have a 96 Mustang Cobra and I was curious if anyone had ever done a head swap, and if so how much did it cost/how much horsepower was increased? Thanks Advance

most people don't because you would have to get new timing chains, cover, intake setup, valve covers, have the pcm reprorammed for 7000 rpm, the stock gt rods would have to be changed because they can't handle that kind of rpm, plus it would weight more because of the aluminum block vs the cast iron block http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/frown.gif cobra parts are a little more pricey from ford than gt stuff as well. theoretically you would make near the same hp or a little more as you. most guys that i know that have swapped just swapped a whole cobra motor in. hope that helps.

Actually you need a Cobra computer and wiring harness. Plus the GT bottem end with Cobra heads results in much lower compression then the Cobra.

The only "poor man's Cobra" swap I know of is building up a Mark VIII motor.

I thought he meant swapping 99+ Cobra heads and intake for his 96 Cobra... http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/confused.gif

Oh yeah...

Ah.. The bottem end is the same. I don't know if 15 hp would be worth the trouble. Currently the fastest Cobras are using the 96-98 heads, although that may change.
