DARN Service Engine Light....

Today I was at one of those coin op car washes and as I drove through the drier my foot slipped off clutch and car stalled. When I turned it back on I noticed the darn "service engine soon" light is on.

I see people on here speaking of the "codes" - how do I find out what the code is for my problem? Do I have to go to a shop and fork over $100 just for them to tell me what the problem is then another $300 ish to fix it????

Will an exhaust leak cause this light to go on? A dirty fuel/oil filter?

As you can "see" I am not very savvy when it comes to cars. I would appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thank you. :D

Re: DARN Service Engine Light....

If you go to your local parts store they usually have code readers you can use for free so that you'll buy stuff from them.
You can also try disconnecting your battery to see if it goes away.
