Default So what is the toughest sport?

An on-going office debate has enspired me to post this tread. "What defines a 'sport' and furthermore, is golf for example, a tougher sport than tennis?" I sure his is a hotly debated subject over cold ones at any local brew house.

Here's my somewhat educated, experienced opinion: I define a 'sport' as an activity which requires a combination of the following elements:
1. Strength
2. Hand-eye/foot coordination
3. Endurance
4. Hand/foot speed (not the same as coordination!)
5. Strategic thinking (the player, not the coach!)

Now given these five mandatory elements, and giving each one an equal weight, rate the sport for each element from 1 to 10. Add up the total points and you can (somewhat objectively) rate the difficultity of the sport.

Here's my list (I've played all)

Sport (Weighted Element ) = Total

-----------------------------------------------------------------
1. Basketball (4 + 8 + 9 + 7 + 8) = 36
(forward - league play, not horse!)
2. Water Polo (5 + 7 + 9 + 6 + 5) = 32
(hole or point - not goalie)
3. Tennis (2 + 8 + 5 + 4 + 3) = 22
(competive singles)
4. Track / Running (1 + 1 + 10 + 7 + 1) = 20
(distance)
5. Golf (2 + 9 + 0 + 0 + 3) = 14
(weekend warrior)
6. weightlifting (10 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 3) = 14

There you have it. Tennis is a tougher "sport" than golf!

Gimme feedback!!

Too much thinking involved in that, but to answer the title of the thread, Australian Rules Football is the toughest sport on earth.

Take care,

I have taken hits on a rugby field, and i have taken hits on a football field. i must say that football hits are harder. even if there are pads, i still think that i have gotten hit harder in football than rugby.

I think Motocross is the toughest. It takes a lot of practise and some balls of steal.

LOL, no. You're not allowed to kill anybody in Rugby.

Aussie Rules Football is to Rugby, what Bigfoot (4x4) is to a Ranger.

As physical as UFC is, I really don't see it as being "Tough Sport"

Why I would still chose the AFC over UFC:

1) there is more rules to think about in Aussie Footy

2) It's very demanding over a long period of time.

Don't get me wrong. I'd rather play Footy than UFC anyday. It's just that UFC seems less of a sport, and more of "who can get the other guy in a position that if he doesn't quit he'll be dead shortly". Heck, any UFC guy could probably get any UFC guy to submit in seconds. DOesn't mean it;s a tougher sport.

I see the "sport" part lacking when it comes to UFC. Even Boxing and Pro-wrestling has more sport-elements.

I know... Pro-wrestling is fake, and UFC is real. So what. ;-)

Lacrosse. Hands down. I might be biased but it has to be one of thge toughest. Probably not as tough as Aussie Rules Football but I would day a close second.

You should see the amounts of bruises and cuts i had after every game

I've played football, basketball, baseball, and I've ran in track. Out of those sports, football is definitely the overall hardest. Track takes a lot of hard work and conditioning, physical strength. But it takes minimal mental work. I'm sure there is a few things harder than regular old American football though.

Okay, I've listed a few of your suggestions and plugged them into David's objective rating. Let's see how boxing, hockey, football, baseball, billiards and bowling stack up:

1. Basketball (4 + 8 + 9 + 7 + 8) = 36
(forward - league play, not horse!)
1. Hockey (4 + 8 + 9 + 7 + 8) = 36
2. Boxing (8 + 6 + 8 + 8 + 3) = 33
3. Water Polo (5 + 7 + 9 + 6 + 5) = 32
(hole or point - not goalie)
4. Football (8 + 3 +3 + 5 + 3) = 25
(O. Line)
5. Tennis (2 + 8 + 5 + 4 + 3) = 22
(competive singles)
6. Track / Running (1 + 1 + 10 + 7 + 1) = 20
(distance)
7. Baseball (4 + 8 + 1 + 3 + 2) = 18
8. Golf (2 + 9 + 0 + 0 + 3) = 14
(weekend warrior)
9. Billiards (0 + 8 + 0 + 0 + 6) = 14
10. weightlifting (10 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 3) = 14
11. Bowling (1 + 8 + 1 + 0 + 2) = 12

There. Hockey and backetball are toughest sports, with boxing a very close second. Billiards and golf are about the same. I can't speak for rugby, how does it stack up to the rest?
