4.6L 3v information wanted!

Hey guys im trying to gather some information about the 4.6L 3V motors. Im contemplating on swapping one into my 65 Mustang at some point. (Though still very undecided) First and foremost I would like to know from those whom have drove them what they think of the motor? What is the aftermarket like as far as computer choices/turners go? Is the computer a stand-alone ECU or is it completely wrapped up with other systems of the car? How much would you expect a 3V and 5spd combo to go for out of a wreck? Any other info tips would be great, thanks guys.

i have a 07 gt with the 4.6l 3v. one good thing about the new three valve is it has a aluminum block so its lighter then the old ones. mpsautosalavage.com specialize mustangs. they have a mach1 engine and trans for 6500 to give you a idea. there is alot of upgrades for the new engine and 550t hp with bolt ons is common. my only complaint about the new 4.6 is i think the rev limiter is set to low because when she really starts to pull hard, if you dont watch the tach you will hit the rev limiter while the engine is still pulling. hope some of this helps but check out the web site above and they can answer your questions because they have done a bunch of swaps and can give you all the info and parts you'll need.

and if it helps i want to put the 03-04 supercharged motor and 6 spd in my 68 fastback one day!!! but for now my wife says i must stick with my built 351w lol

Isnt the motors that are in the Mach1's a 4.6L 2V? I didnt know that they made mach1's in the 05+ stang.

no the mach 1 motors are iron block, aluminum head 32 valve dual overhead cam engines like what was in the 03 04 cobras minus the supercharger. also the mach 1 motors are pre 2005, i cant remember for sure but i belive they are 01-04. i was just giving you idea of what it might cost. in my opinion the the cobra or mach motor have a lot stronger bottom end (malhe pistons, forged rods, ect, ect) if you want to go stock motor with minor mods i would go with the 05 up 3v 4.6 since it is a lot lighter due to the aluminum block, but if heavy mods are in the plan go with the cobra or mach 1 motor.
sorry for the confussion

Re: 4.6L 3v information wanted!

Ah I got ya. Yeah, when I read 5600 that seemed high, then I dug a bit and found it was a 4v motor. I honestly dont think its worth the money those motors are going for, especially when you consider the extra cost for aftermarket parts on top of that. Like you suggested I'm thinking the 4.6 3V 05+ motor. I believe 2k for an engine/trans combo is possible, thoughts? Reading around it seems like that with modest boost the 3v motors can see 500hp easily, while still being extremely streetable. If I were to go all out I wouldnt even be considering a mod motor, I'd go straight for an LS-series gm motor.
Another question. Do the transmissions of all 4.6L motors bolt up to any 4.6? I would be going with a manual transmission. Again, looking around it seems like there is difference between the 99-04 motors and the 05+ motors. Hopefully I can get an engine/trans combo, but who knows if I would be able to find one. Thanks for the info!

Re: 4.6L 3v information wanted!

03-04 4Valve mach motors are aluminum block, not iron like there 03-04 cobra brothers. also i just purchased a bone stock 05 gt wiht 2000 miles on the ticker. my buddy has a 99 aluminum block cobra stock with jlt cold air kit. they run pretty dead on. the 4 valve heads are sick as far as air flow but my stock 3v has the varible cam timing which is nice. i don't know how an aftermarket wiring would address the cam timing. i like the ls idea but i personally could never put a bowtie in a ford. i think 2000 is way less than you can get a 3v motor for right now but thats just my .02. good luck!
