Post Fuel System Problems??

Yesterday while driving my Mustang (89 LX 5-speed) quit and then would not restart. Two people helped push and in their pushing I popped the clutch she fired right up and then successfully drove 30 miles without another problem. She has a 183,000 on her without any fuel system work. She then fired right up sitting in the driveway later. Up until yesterday and Sunday she had been sitting for over 3 weeks.

What's the opinion?

Need more info. Did it stumble and quit, or just shut off? When it wouldn't re-start, did it crank over fine and just wouldn't catch? Did it ever act like it was running out of fuel? How loud is your fuel pump?

If it push-started easily, that doesn't sound fuel related. If it quit due to a pressure problem, push-starting it wouldn't generate any pressure.

Take care
~Chris

Question

Sorry I was in a hurry when I typed it.

No it shut off in gradually in seconds and it would restart and run for a second and then die. Did this repeatedly. It sounded like it had spark and the fuel pump is no louder than before but regardless I think I am going to replace the fuel pump and pressure regulator - just to be safe with 183,000.

Could the gas have settled some in the month because the temperature has changed around 40 to 50 degrees in the time it was down.

Any more opinions?

It went from 90 degree days around the first of Sept to almost freezing last week. Right now we are have highs in the 70's with lows in the low 50's.

She has a 1/3 of a tank.

Hey, I just had this same problem (sorta)

mine would cut out, and start back up.. BUT it was combination of my coil and fuel pump (and the TFI unit since it wouldn't start afterwards, basically a luck of draw that it would start)

So, check your spark again (sorry if you already have) and then get your pump replaced.. replace coil if spark looks weak... if your car takes more than a few turns to start, maybe you want to replace the TFI unit, (as mine now starts almost right away, even when really cold/wet outside)

I don't know if TFI has anything to do with the smooth running of the car once its started, or does the TFI come in just to start it.. (hopefully someone can answer that for me!)

I have already decided to change the fuel filter this weekend and order a new coil, and pump. I guess I may have to look into the TFI.
