Gear Swap
Hi Guys,
I have a 2002 GT and I'm thinking about changing the gear. It has a 3.27 now. I'm thinking about installing a 3.73. First, is that a good choice? Second, would I have to get my PCM reflashed (car has a digitial odometer)? My brother said I will have to. If that's the case, what kind of shop would do something like that? Thanks, - Mike |
Your choice of gear depends on what tranny you have and what kind of driving you mostly do. If it's an auto, I'd say go with 4.10s. If it's a stick then the choice between 3.73s and 4.10s mainly depends on how much freeway driving you do and if you mind losing the extra 1 mpg or so with 4.10s compared to 3.73s. If you plan on adding a power adder go with 3.73s or you will run out of 4th gear in the 1/4.

i would recomend 3.90 gears it`s right in betwwen the 3.73 and 4.10 more torque duplication and relativly good rpms on the highway that you would not get with the 4.10`s:D o yeah and you will have to have the your car re flashed any dealer can do it.

If you don't want to reflash there is also an animal called the SpeedCal:

As far as 3.90 gears go, who makes them and does anyone have experience with these? I had heard from some folks that it is best to stick with genuine Ford gears to avoid problems, but Ford doesn't make anything in between 3.73 and 4.10.

Just finished installing 4.10's in my 00 GT. The "Speed Cal" installation was a breeze. My recommendation would be the 4.10's, RPM at 70 mph is about 2500, not bad for cruising down he highway. The bottom end 10 times better, the 1 - 2 powershift is the funnest!!!
