Lightbulb Gears...?

Hey Guys, I know about gears and I've read alot of the posts. But I was wanting some more advice if you guys would like to share, that is. I'm wanting to up grade to either 3.55 or 3.73. I drive sometimes agood bit on the highway and through town. I don't want to kill my gas to bad and I dont really go to the track that often. Which One would you guys suggest. I know the 3.73s will make me go alittle faster than the 3.55s, how much of a difference is there? I'm also wanting to up grade my gears to make a LS-1's Nightmare. Did you guys know some of them come with 3.42s stock? Thats a pretty good diffrence from a 3.27 of mine stock. Right now I haven't raced one yet so I don't know how I would do, but I do know I can blow the doors off the LT-1 pretty good right now.

I'm lookin at 3.55's my self. I don't want to waste the money on gas... but then again, would i be wasting my money on those and wishing for 3.73's?

3.55s would be a waste of time and money. For GTs ATLEAST 3.73s and for Cobras ATLEAST 4.10s while 4.30s are better even for a strictly street car, especially if you want to be a LS1's nightmare. I have 4.10s, drive it almost daily, and on the highway, with no loss in gas milage.

BTW, LS1s can have 3.42s, but they also have a 2.62 first gear. Ever notice how when you run an LS1 you can usually get him off the line, but around 3rd gear he comes roaring back?

3.73s for 5speed. 4.10s for auto. This is for the GT.

I would imaging that going from 3.27 to 3.55's would not be a big jump. I imagine 3.73's or better would suit you. If you had 2.73's then even 3.55's would really wake the car up.

Go right the first time, go 4.10s...

If you have a lot of highway driving a day (50 miles or more), then go with the 3.73s, but if not then 4.10s are your best bet...

Whimpy whimpy 3.27s are no good to our cars...

4.10s to GTs (NA or SCed)
4.30+ to Cobras and Auto GTs

Thanks Guys for the replies. You guys have me out pretty good. I'm going to go with the 3.73s. What is a good shifter? I know its what ever kind of feel I like. But I don't want one to be real notchy and hard to reach. Mainly for my wife who drives the Stallion here and there. And Again Thanks for the Info.

Steeda Tri-ax, B&M Ripper. Either one of those would be good. Pro 5.0 makes a good one, too, but I'm not sure if they have one for the T45 for the 96-up stangs. There might be some others that I can't think of right now but two of the top ones are those that I first mentioned and the Steeda I've heard the best about.

Pro 5.0 makes a very nice shifter for the T45s.

I have the Steeda, and I really like it. It has a better handle position then the Pro 5.0, but a good number of people like the Pro 5.0 feel better. Best way to tell is to drive one.

I had a Kirban shifter. Not as stip oriented, or notchy feeling as the Pro 5.0 but tighter then the B&M. It is a perfect comprimise between a street and a strip shifter. Kirban really doesn't advertise so some of their products are like insider secrets. All the guys w/ mustangs an the speed shop had the Kirban shifter (and there are 3 and can have the pick from anything) and they love it. The handle is short like the original Pro 5.0 but I am sure you can put one of Steeda's or Pro 5.0's new longer handle on. Ohh, you can put the stock top of the handle on it you want the same long handle, but the tighter throws of the shifter.
