Quick Starter Install Question

1989 5.0 AOD w/ 135k

I just installed a PMGR starter. I just want to verify with someone that I set up the wires correctly:

1.) On the starter relay, I transfered the old starter wire to the terminal containing the (+) battery wire. So, this terminal (right hand terminal as you look down on the relay from the drivers side) has the battery wire, the old starter wire, and some other stuff.

2.) Connected new starter wire to the terminal that previously held the old starter wire. This terminal (left hand side) contains ONLY the new starter wire.


The car starts up just fine; however, I don't notice much difference from my old Motorcraft starter. It makes a slightly higher pitched, pulsating noise. (I was under the impression the engine would start way faster and sound very different than my original.)

I am probably being overly anal about this...I just wanna check with someone for piece of mind.

The starter will not increase the starting time, unless the old one was really dragging or something, it's only job is to spin the engine. If yours has a delay to start, try a tune up. And don't look for a problem that is not there.

While you're at it, re-wire the entire system with new, thicker wires. That made a huge difference in my car with cranking speed. I have 165K miles, original starter.

I have had several different starters in my car. They all make a little different sound when starting up, but like 88workcar said, their only job is too spin the engine. Startup time really won't be affected by different starters, unless of course one is bad and can barely turn the engine over.

Was your old starter bad, or were you just replacing it trying to fix another problem?
