Ring and Pinion Install

I've had the ring and pinion install kit and the bearing overhaul kit sitting in my room for about two weeks. I've been looking into people installing it for me, but I'm stubbornly refusing to pay $250 for an install.

My question, is it that hard to install a ring and pinion kit (I'm no mechanic, but I can follow instructions pretty well) or should I keep shopping around for a profesional.

In addition to that, what is a good install price to pay someone w/out getting ripped off.

And finally...if I should get a professional, anybody know anyone who does a good job in the Atlanta area?

Wouldn't reccommend it if you are a novice/intermediate at mechanic work on a vehicle.

It's real hard to do without the right tools, hell it's hard to do with the right tools. I paid $200 bucks here in TN. you could shop around but go to a rear end specialist and pay the extra few bucks to have it done perfectly! There are no cheap mods!!

you can not do it without the right tools i`ve done them before you would need a dial indicator to check backlash some form of plastigauge or yellow gease to check gear engagement and a good torque wrench,an impact gun, and about 6 or more hours i`ve done it before my first time took me 9 hours to get it right, and that was with the help of a proffessional mechanic and use of a shop. pay to have it done if it`s done wrong it will cost you more than 250.00 for a new axle and gears and carrier.

I wouldn't reccomend taking this on unless you know what you are doing or have someone help that does. I paid $400 (yes this is the going rate in my area

) in labor to have mine done, plus another $100 for the rebuild kit.

I found a place to install mine after days of searching the internet/yellow pages. The total was 263 + change, but I already had the overhaul kit and all necessary parts for the job. The going rate in our place is high, too. After I finally found some places that would do it, they were charging anywhere from 360-800 bucks. All of these were speed shops (mustangs unlimited) or performance dealers. I found a local speed shop that specialized in mustangs and only in the transmission to the rear. The guy was really cool and did a kick *** job. Mine don't wine or anything, like I've heard from a few. You guys were also right...my speedo is messed up pretty bad. But the next mod will probably be a chip, so hopefully that'll solve some of it. If anybody lives in the Atlanta area and needs a good mechanic for their transmission/rear end, e-mail me.

Just a small, inexpensive speedo gear...

Really, what kind? I thought I wouldn't need one of those...and if I get one, is it something I can install myself? And wouldn't a chip be next on the list of mods? (i'm puttin off underdrive pulleys for now).

Its pretty easy, but you have to be familiar with your tranny...

The question is going to be which tooth speedo gear you're going to need, and to be honest, I can't remember...

But its only a few bucks.... A heck of a lot less than a new chip....

And wouldn't a chip fix all this? I'm planning on that being my next mod, and I don't drive my car that often as I'm now in school and freshmen aren't allowed vehicles (no parking in Atlanta) their first year. So, should I just wait (will the chip solve all problems) or do I still need to get that speedo gear?

1998 were still mechanical on speed delivery. You can either buy a gear, or you can get a small electronic device that sits below your shifter and allows you to set jumpers to configure for tire height and gear ratio... I am a little under the weather right now so I don't remember the devices name... I think you can get it from Dallas Mustang online site

Steeda is right....

A chip WILL NOT be able to compensate for the speedo on a 96-98 GT or Cobra.

The options are the speedo gear or the Speedcal, both available from Dallas Mustang.

Depending on where you buy the speedo, it will cost you anywhere from 15 to 20 dollars.
The Speedcal is around one hundred dollars.

Hmmm, I wonder which one I would buy?

You got me on that one... I would assume that it would be a simple task of locating the speed cable and removing it from the tranny housing and replacing the gear, I believe you are supposed to put a little lube on the new gear to reduce the friction and increase the life... but, again, I haven't done this before, maybe Hammer knows... You could also "borrow" a chilton's manual from someone and look in there, I am sure it would mention something about it...

There is no replacement speedo gear for 96 up cars. You have to buy a speedcal.

No...I think there is a speedo gear...all the places I've seen advertise them for 96-98's. The gear doesn't look like something that would just plug in, though...and I don't want to have to take apart my tranny (don't even know if I can). So, would it be cheaper to install the the speed cal or the gear (if someone else has to install it for me)?
