Post It's May, still no new heads or intake by other manufacturers?

I went to the Cecil county Dragstrip the other week and I got to see some mean 5.0s and 4.6s. The 5.0s were the fastest with little mods. The event brought back some fond memories of my 92 LX...Question is..When the hell is someone going to produce some heads and intakes for the 4.6 at a reasonable price? I'm getting tired of waiting!
I heard the rumor of new 4.6 parts over three months ago, what gives?

We all want it but it couldn't happen soon enough

I guess we'll just have to keep waiting.

First of all, no manufacturers introduce new parts in the spring. This is when the weather gets nice, everyone pulls their cars out, and the factories get slammed with orders. They usually are backordered on existing parts, nevermind new stuff.

Second, the industry trade show hosted by SEMA is always the first week of November. That is where everyone debuts their new stuff, because they know all the people in the industry will be there.

Third, don't expect any major developments right away. The 302 was brought out in the 1960's, and it wasn't until the 1990's that we finally got a huge selection of parts. Also, that engine was not as efficient in stock form, so changes had a bigger effect. One challenge the aftermarket is having is that they can't improve upon some parts from the factory, because the stock parts are already good.

Fourth, the design and tooling process for casting intakes and heads is incredibly expensive. That means only a few companies are capable of producing them. Unfortunately, the 4.6 is probably not on the top of their priority list. I hate to say it, but right now the sport compact market is the hottest thing going. They're probably working on heads for the Focus or the Civic.

Cool

I asked a factory guy (Barry Shephard) about the costs associated with manufacturing heads for the 4.6 engine. His response floored me. Consider this: It takes 24 machining operations to produce a common (left & right side) GT-40 head for the 302. It takes 256 machining operations to produce a single side (left OR right) 4.6 two valve head. Even more for the 4 valve head. Now if you were an aftermarket company would you jump right into the fray?

Well it would be nice to have options, I just don't want my to be 10 years old when the aftermarket starts flowing with 4.6 parts.

Of course by then I'll probably have a DOHC waiting for the parts.

Joe Steward it making over 1200 hp on ported stock heads (4V) with regrinds, stock block, and crank (4V) (rebalanced) and a Paxton. How much more power do you need?
