Post Just got a 98 - big differences from 87-93?

We just got a 98 GT for my wife. I've got a '93 GT. What are the big differences between the two, since I'll be working on both now? Obviously the 4.6 is different, but what about trans, rear end, ease of mods, etc? I haven't picked up a service manual yet.

Cool

The motor is a bit of a PITA to work on. About the only easy things to do are change the plugs (they are on top and down inside the lower intake), change the oil, little things like that. Any thing major like head work, lol, yeah right! Decent motor but they lack guts. Add some gears to it, at least 3.73s and it'll help alot. They will still get good gas mileage with gears, too. Is it a 5 speed or an auto? For the daily driver it's recommended to use the 3.73s for the 5 speed and 4.10s for the auto. A step steeper for the verts.
Transmission is a T45. They aren't interchangable with the T5. They are supposed to be better and stronger but all I had were problems with mine, but mine was also the first year for it (1996). The synchronizers aren't very impressive in the T45. I had to have my tranny rebuilt at around 50,000 miles and I wasn't even hard on it. They maybe a bit better in the 98s.
The rear is still the good ol' 8.8".
Everything for those cars are quite a bit more expensive than for the 5.0. The prices are starting to get better but it's much cheaper to get parts for the 5.0 and it's easier to work on the 5.0. There isn't much room under the hood of the 4.6 stangs and they are harder to work on. And there isn't near the aftermarket for them like the 5.0. Example: heads, intakes, cams, etc. There are blowers, turbos (just starting to show up), and nitrous for them.
Of course the SN95s are 5 lug which gives much more choices for wheel/tire combos.
The stock H-pipe has 6 cats on it. You might wanna think about a better flowing exhaust for sure. The headers are a bisnatch to change. You have to jack up the motor to do it. I've heard it said it's not worth it to change the headers. Though I would recommend some long tubes.
The suspension is better handling than the foxes. Better ride, too.

Hope this helps give you an idea about the 4.6 SN95s.

Wink

Yup, 6 cats. I guess Ford figured they had to curtail the awesome power of the first-gen 4.6's

...I'm allowed to joke... it's what I drive
