Looking at used 4.6's.
 

Hey all,

I was considering looking for a new daily driver so I can put my olds in storage and was looking at the 4.6 mustangs. How happy are you guys with yours? What are problems with these cars? I know that 5.0 mustangs are pretty strong but will the 4.6 be as durable? What should I look out for or years to avoid in a used 4.6L? I will leave it stock because I have to use it for transportation to and from college. Thanks for any info or comments!

the 4.6's are very durable. Depending on how much money you have, I would opt for a 99+ GT. The 96-98's ran good, but the 99GT's have 40 hp more stock. I've seen stock 99GT's run 14.0's all day with crappy 60 foots. You could look at the 96-98 Cobras, they are about in the same price range. 32 V DOHC Modular....drool...:)

4.6 parts are expensive. No way around it. Also, they are respectable stock (99+) but their big problem is breathing. To really fix it you need a blower.

For a reliable, comfortable car get one. Get the newest one you can afford and avoid the track at all costs. I've been twice and I'm hooked on dropping my et. Its going to get expensive if I don't buy a toy.

your best bet is to buy a 96-98 cobra. that way you get DOHC 4-valve for relatively cheap...and if you got the $$ to spare then why not get a 99-up cobra?

Failing that, you should get a 99-up GT. both of these modular cars are faster than 5.0 pusrod motors if they are all mostly stock, and blowers do miracles for the modular motors.

Avoid the 96-98 GTs (early sohc modular motors) because they are ssslllooowww unless you do a headswap.

I've got my 97 in the 14's with no mods, but yeah that's not exactly fast. I figure I can get real close to 13 with basically swapping gears, although it would be on slicks.

Still, if you like to turn wrenches, get a 302. If not so much, listen to blue01gt
