Contemplating gear change - help!
I'm currently running 3.55's, but I'm thinking of changing to a steeper gear, maybe 3.73 or 4.10. Someone had mentioned to me that Ford makes a 3.90 too (I haven't been able to fin 3.90's online anywhere - where can they be purchased?). Which gear should I choose? My stang's a 5-speed driven mostly on the street, but I do go highways (80 mph driving) and hit the track about 3 times a year. Your help is needed - and appreciated. Thanks.

Unless you do alot of 1/4 mile racing and you are trying to tune for the perfect gear at the finish - I would not suggest moving from 3.55 to 3.73 (unless it is absolutely FREE). The difference would be VERY SMALL in my opinion. And the cost for new gears & install averages $400-$500. Maybe the jump to 4.10 would make a difference, but if you consistently drive over 80 for extended periods I think the revs may be a bit much.
I love my 4.10's for weekend warrior stuff, and only drive on warm sunny days. If I had a daily driver I would go with 3.73 - but I would not change 3.55 to 3.73.

It's not a daily commuter, but whe I do go to the track, it's about 1 1/2 hour ride on the hwy, going about 80mph. I'm just afraid it'll be whining like mad w/ 4.10's. I called Motivegear about the 3.90's......and I was tld that they don't exist for 8.8 rears....only 9.

No problem stangrunner.......at least i know there out there now. Thanks drastic......it looks like they do have it. Now I've gotta make up my mind between the 3.73 or 3.90. I guess 3.90 would probably be the best.?!?

With 3.90 you will be taking off from lights in second gear because you only get about 10 feet if first gear. I only go to the track a couple times a year and like the 3.55's for just driving around.

Thats false advertisement, i too was thinking about 3.90, 1st gear wouldnt be too bad, considering i know people that run 4.30, but i too like to drive over 80, when im late for work and stuff, so im leaning towards 373, which i recomend, but like mentioned above, it wouldnt be a big difference, luckily the track is like 5 minutes from my house, so if i could afford another car, i would throw in some 4.10's, but for now i guess i'll stick with these granny gears
the 3.90 sounds good, but i was always told to use nothing but motorsport gears, and they do not have 3.90 ratio available.

here's a easy weay to figure your rpm's with the diff gears. multiply by the diff each gear gives you like this:
3.55 to 3.73 1.050 3.55 to 3.90 1.098 3.55 to 4.10 1.154 I figured it out with a 26" tire and rpm's rise about 120-140 between each jump in gear

I run a 4.10 gear and dont have any problems with 1st gear. At 60 mph she turns 2250rpm. I have taken it on trips around 2hrs long and don't have any problem with overheating or anything like that. 4.10 gear is great between stop lights and 1/8 mile tracks.

Motivegear only sells wholesale, not retail. They gave me 3 #'s of retailers who carry their products. All 3 I called said they only make them for 9" rears.....even though the Motivegear site says 8.8's. It really doesn't matter what their site says anyway since you can't buy directly from them anyway.
