Max horsepower.
I was wondering how much hp a 96 GT 4.6 can handle before new parts are needed.

Re: Max horsepower.
373 gears ford racing 169.95
cold air intake bbk 185.95 flowmaster cat back 295.95 the cheapest x-pipe pace setter 165.95 bbk headers 299.95 centerforce clutch 365.95 nos kit 150 shot 636.95 thats where i would start.idk if you can do the work your self .if you havent put gears in befor make sure you have some one help you that knows how to do it and has done it befor.its always a good idea to put new clutchs in the rear end when doing the gears to ensure the posi is working right |

My GT is an automatic by the way.

Re: Max horsepower.
The stock bottom end is good to about 400-450 rwhp as long as you keep the rpm reasonable. Your not gonna make 350-400 rwhp with out a power adder of some sort. I vote for a supercharger and some gears, or a turbo but that'll be a little more expensive. Or is you decide to stay naturally aspirated a PI head swap would give you an increase in compression as well as much better flowing heads. But some guys have had good luck porting non PI heads. Full bolt-ons and some good cams and you can put 280-320 to the wheels. But $2000 ain't going to get you there. But you could be close depending on what route you go and how much work you do yourself.

put it this way... I had every bolt on and N/A cams for it to make 290rwhp I added the blower at 8psi it put down 465rwhp and 422 rwtq I made 465rwhp out of a stock shortblock 2v but its not safe and I would if you are planning on making over 350 do rods and pistons at least... I know many say 400 is safe but for it to be safe you need a perfect tune and never get a bad tank of gas.... plus if boosted never go in to boost in cold air |
Re: Max horsepower.
my buddys car has 332 (6500rpm) at the wheels on his 97.we ported the heads, had them milled and ran a thinner gasket to bring the cr to 11to1. comp springs and custom cams.typhoon intake ,port matched and t-body.has a bigger fp and injectors and was tuned.it has some other bolt ons but thats the basis on what made the power .yea it cost more that 2 grand but u gotta pay to play

Re: Max horsepower.
srry i just looked at my last reply it was 382 not 332...what is your explaination of "bolt on" a cold air intake?lmao.its not like we did a stroker motor.ok spent 100 bucks to get the heads milled and did a port job and bolted them on.u gotta but money where it counts compression and air flow!!!not cold air intakes and underdrive pulleys

plus it would take a lot of milling and a real thin head gasket to get 11 to 1 unless your talking pi swap as well... but even then I dont see it.... if he got that much power then he should be real proud cause thats about 40 to 50 more rwhp on a stock shortblock 2v that I have ever seen posted.... I think thats inline with what ken B put down with a full built motor with race heads and intake |
