I would say it's just taking your time shifting. Press in the clutch pedal, then shift, then let out. Just taking your time to do it and not shifting fast or power shifting.

A power shift is not taking you foot off the gas when you shift or just lifting off the gas a bit. (Stock tranny might not like the power shift) I guess a "granny shift" would be, clutch in, foot off the gas and shift.

Hi, I'm new to the group. My 2002 gt has all of 500 miles on it. I guess I'm sort of babying it with the shifting. If I remember red line is about 5.5k rpm. I'm shifting at around 3000 rpm. My question is this, is it l hard on the car to run the rpm up to the 5000 before shifting? Obviously I want to have fun but I don't want to abuse my new baby either. 5000 SOUNDS high but I don't know.

If you didn't take your foot off the gas while engaging the clutch, you would rev the #*^$# out of your engine. Powershifting is, I believe, shifting while the pedal is floored without pushing in the clutch....Stock trannies will often blow third if you do this.

I have 113 thousand miles on my car with the original tranny and engine (neither close to needing replacement). I floor it to 5000 when getting on the freeway like everyday. As long as you shift cleanly, you should be perfectly fine pushing your engine to 5k.

It is actually good to baby it for a while, but you should be fine now.

Not true. What happens under these conditions is called "flaring" and is a condition that is kept under control during proper powershifting. Check out this link for more on powershifting and grannyshifting. This information seems the most consistant and comes, in part, from a MMAFF article.

A simplification of Powershifting - keep gas floored, quickly apply glancing force to the clutch (not a full depression) and move the shifter to the next gear.

I disagree strongly with his point about "speed shifting." Speed shifting is not just shifting fast. It's shifting without depressing the clutch pedal at all.

Ken B, if you've got 500mi on it, it's time for the first oil change. You want to get the break in metal out, along with the assembly lube and all that extra garbage. Once you have your first oil change, feel free to get on it a little. As long as you're not beating the car for a bit longer, there won't be any harm done. In other words, 5000rpm is fine. So is 5500rpm, and so is 5800rpm (redline). Just don't stay on it for more than a couple gears that way till you get a few more on it.

in my 200 gt the rev limiter is set at 6250 when at the track i time my shifts at 6000 this is on a stock tranny with 57000 frekin miles on it already. i dont know if the rev is set different on those cars or not but isay drive like ya stole it after you get that oil changed. there are a lot of things that could be in that oil like metal shavings:D

The rev limiter isn't set different, but I was talking about the redline. You can drive it like you stole it at 500mi if you want to, but I think I'll wait until my engine heat cycles a few more times and get's a little more broken in before I beat it to death. I might actually have this car for a while.

Hah, more like the clutch won't like it. I've never had a problem speedshifting and dropping the clutch. Naw my problem is outrunning the shifter or trying to put the tranny in something like 1.5 or 2.5 gear:mad:

the redline is 6250, I've popped that more than a few times.

Anywhosit. when the engines cold, keep it below 3000 rpms and don't mash the gas until she's warmed up even after break in.
