Plug wires

What does everyone here run, size, brand etc?

I replaced my plugs, but did't want to get Kragen off brand wires, so I held off on those. Unfortunatly, my #8 is loose, and actually does not like to stay on that well.

Now I'm going to replace my plug wires, and without doing anything I doubt I'd see a benefit with hi-po wires. I think I'm just going to pick some up from Ford on the way home tomorrow, since everyone else has to order them anyway.

Just ordered a set from ROUSH for 50 bucks plus shipping. Also saw that Steeda had them for $50. They seem to have come down in price over the past few months. I think I priced the ford set at over $80.

Eric4Nitrous 09-16-2002 11:23 AM

Why pay for $50 for a name??? Why not just use accel wires??

surfbeast 09-16-2002 11:38 AM

The "direct Fit" wires for the 4.6's have always been a bit high, unless you want to buy the universal plugs and cut & fit the plugs yourself, and they are still close to 40 bucks or so. The ford plug wires for a 2V 4.6 were about 110 bucks back six months ago but have now came down. The bigger wires 9 - 10 mm are still in the 90 to 110 range. The Roush/ Steeda wires are probably made by someone else but a direct fit wire set for 50 bucks ( in red ) seemed like a good deal to me. If Accel sells a direct fit wire set for under 50 bucks than the local auto stores didn't know about it.
Also, these wires were the stock wire diameter, I understand you only need the bigger wires when you upgrade your distribution system. Is that correct?

Eric4Nitrous 09-16-2002 12:01 PM

Yes it's always a good idea to upgrade to a bigger plug wire when you put a good ignition system in.

FRPP 9mm wires - red color - direct fit.

$80

The Deuce 09-16-2002 04:07 PM

I can't seem to find anywhere out here that I can get them for less than $100. At least they are Motorcraft 9mm wires. I don't feel totally screwed, just partially.

MSD makes a set of 8.5 mm wires, direct fit for $80-$85 bucks.

Don't skimp on wires, you will regret it...

Can you direct me to where I can get some MSD wires?

Anyone? Accell 8.8's?

Motorsport 9's?

The dealers around here don't know what the heck they are talking about. I call with the FRPP part number to a dealer that is supposed to carry them and they tell me they are motorcraft wires. So I call a non-svt dealer and ask about them (as motorcrafts) and the guy tells me they are Motorsport.

I think I'm going to open my own speed shop down here, just so I can ge the parts I need (good ones) without running around for a week. Its pretty annoying, and all I'm after are plug wires today!!

Eric4Nitrous 09-16-2002 08:06 PM

You can find msd wires in summit..or most any mail order catalog. You can find the accels at advance, auto zone..any place like that.

The Deuce 09-17-2002 12:35 AM

Thanks Eric.

I picked up a set of Motorsport 9mm from the SVT dealer 1/2 hour from my house. Needed an excuse to get up there and see their Cobras.

There was a laser red one, which I was under the impression they stopped making them that color.

Not a fan of their 5k market adjustment on the car though. They didn't do anything to the 01 sticker, really made me mad, and I shared that with the sales guy that asked me if I needed any help.

Oh well.

Eric4Nitrous 09-17-2002 09:48 AM

Glad i could help. Yeah sometimes i find myself going to the local ford dealers just to try out the new cobra's..haha Few powershifts here, few there=alotta fun :)

I'm pretty certain the FRPP 9mm wires are now FMS (Ford Motorsport) 9mm wires...

It couldn't hurt to change them out. I only did mine for appearance purposes... they look great. Wish I had a picture. Sure dressed up my engine compartment.

The wires were easy to change out except for the last two on the passenger side. You have to remove a couple things to get in there... If you go with the larger wires, your wire looms may no longer fit. I used my dremel to widen the looms a bit to hold the 9mm wires. Worked perfectly.

I bought mine at "Mustangs Unlimited"... They don't have these in their on-line catelog but you can get a free catelog sent to you in the mail that has them and the others mentioned...
