Default How many quarts of tranny fluid for a C-4

How many quarts of tranny fluid will I need to completely fill my
C-4 tranny.....about 12?

If all goes well, I'm going to fire up this new beast on Sunday.
Would it be ok to start the engine before I fill the tranny up or will that hurt the transmission?
I know I won't be able to drive it anywhere like that but would it hurt just to start the engine?
I haven't bought the case of tranny fluid yet...that's why I'm asking.

Dang, I don't remember how many quarts it took. Then it could depend whether it is a case fill or pan fill trans. You need to fill the torque converter up part of the way before you put it in. Put 4 quarts in the trans to start with and then start the car and allow it to reach operating temperature. Add oil then to the proper level on the dip stick.

Thumbs up

Hey, man, glad to hear it's coming along.

I think you'll need about 4 qrts to fill the tq converter and another 4 to fill the tranny. Don't start it up without the tranny fluid, you'll mess up the pump and probably burn up some other stuff in there (same reason you don't pull and auto car with the rear wheels on the ground without the motor running).

Foxbody , I filled the torque converter part way but it seemed to only want about 1/2 or 1 qt.
I'm hoping that's ok and that the fluid will level itself off once it's started and running for a while.

How many qts have you put in all together? You said you filled it to about 1/2? Are you saying, that you only used a 1/2 qt? (it's early for me on a Sunday morning, so I can't think really well, just yet...)

If you know the tranny is dry, or about how much trans fluid you already put in, just put in, like, 2 or 3 qts (or as much as you can) and crank the car, just (with the help of someone else) be ready with your funnel to start filling the rest of the tranny while the car is at idle--- that is if it idles perfectly on it's first crank .

Sorry for the confusion. I only put 1/2 qt in the tq converter when I put the tranny in. That's all the fluid that's in the system at all right now. It didn't seem to want any more than that. I hope that's ok.

Okay, well, you said you were planning on cranking it... get around to it yet? Huh, huh, huh??? (j/k) How's everything coming along? (trust me, I know there is always crap that gets in the way )

Still though, once you crank the car, you need to start filling (through dipstick tube) the tranny with fluid till it's full.

Default 8 qts.?

I think it's about 8 qts. total. I would get about 10 so as to have a little extra if you need to top it off in the future. Let it warm up some and shift it through all the gears so as to fill the different areas of the tranny. Then go out and drive for hour after it's full and check the level again when you get back.

That will be a little bit hard to do since there are no current tags on the car. I don't plan on driving it until spring time.
I'm sure I'll be sneaking a few spins through the alleys just to see how she runs

Foxbody , I'm in the process of trying to get it started but I think I have some grounding issues.
Read my other post: "Battery not big enough for new motor"
and everything is explained there. See what you think.

c4's take 10 qts of fluid.

glad to hear that you finally got the motor together, sorry to hear that you can't get to turn over though. I had that problem when I went to fire my 351 up for the first time, came to find out my starter wasn't strong enough to crank it over.

Foxbody , what starter are you using for your 351?
I switched to the new style that are smaller and lighter that are found on the '92-up mustangs. Just curious.

I go to the parts store and say "Gimme a starter for an '87 crown vic". It's your usual 351W starter. Remember a while back when we were discussing overheating starters .

The starter you have should easily turn over your motor, I would think...

Well, my C-4 does take about 10 qts., but that's with a deep B&M pan that takes 2 qts. extra.
