Air silencer removal mod..questions
Wouldn't doing this mod open up a space inbetween the fenderwall and the filter causing the filter to suck in some hot air? Is this mod really worth doing or will it suck in some hot air?
|
Just leave it in until you order the C&L 80mm Kit. There is no proof that the silencer mod works, and even so, you might see 2hp...just leave it for now......order the C&L!!!!

Since your moving about 70% of the time, engine compartment heat probably would'nt affect performance. Before my C&L 80mm, I modified the air silencer by cutting some of the end off to enlarge the hole, I then placed a 4" pvc pipe in it - to extend into the fenderwell, never had any problems and it revved RPM's a little quicker.
Try it, you can always put it back in (non-modified). |
Sorry for my ignorance, i'm still a little new to the mustang world...What is a C & L??
|
One thing to remember - the '02 requires the 85mm mass air kit not the 80mm as outlined above. It'll save you a few days having to return and receive the right one.

i put a drag racincing k&n on mine , put the stock air nozzle back in the fender, cut off all the small end, added some bigger hose to that, got better preformance & sound, btw i pulled my rubber snorkle up to my k&n, worked for me? :)

okay i just took out my air silencer and the intake is like 100 times louder, especially above 3000 rpm's. I didn't have a chance to buy the K & N filter yet, but it definatly feels peppier. I will hopefully buy the filter today or this week...Thank you all for the help!

I bought a C&L 80mm MAF kit for my 98 GT. I really didn't notice a difference. I guess it depends on what you have after the kit. I was thinking about hooking up an air scoop underneath the front, like those 89-93 Ram Air kits. The C&L documentation says it will make the car perform worse, but since I didn't notice any performance gain from the C&L, it's worth a shot. Anyone ever hook up a Ram Air kit to a C&L?
The air silencer thing... It's worth a shot. I did it to my car before I got the C&L. It's one of those things that is quick and easy to take out and put back on, so go for it. |
Yeah definatly.....So I had time to goto Autozone, which is 30 miles from my house :(, and I picked up a K & N drop in for $50, threw it in there in a bout 5 min, and am really happy with it. I took off the silencer, and wow is the intake a ton louder! Especially above 3000 RPM's the thing just roars now. Also when I rev in nuetral you hear the mighty suck! Any other performance mods that won't void warantee?
|
UH-OH, you have the mod virus!
Voiding your warranty really depends on your service dealer (for bolt-ons)...with all my little bolt-ons, my service dealer welcomed me for any problems, not that I had any. Rule of thumb: If your going to open the intake side (ex: C&L, throttle body, etc..), open up the exaust also (higfhflow cat pipe, cat back, etc...). You've started at the right point, now work your way back... 4:10 gears would really wake your car up.... Good Luck! |
Im a little undecided on which gears....4.10s may really be going overboard for me. I do mostly around town driving, but I do alot of highway driving also...wouldnt 3.73s be the way to go for someone with my driving habits?

My Gear Recomendations:
Moderate: Auto: 3.73 Manual: 3.55 Aggressive: Auto: 4.10 Manual: 3.73 Crazy People: Auto: 4.56 Manual: 4.10 Thanks, DoranW |
Okay good point...thanks.....one more thing though, my car really runs like 10 times as fast and better when the engine is still cold. Noticably a bigger power gain when it's cold. What should I do? Also, when I pop the hood and the car is running, the engine shakes a tiny bit, is this normal because it's such a huge engine? Thanks

I just have a K&N FIPK on mine, which is not really worth anything.
|
The stock air box with a K&N replacment filter flows more then a WMS Velocity Tube, Pro-M 87 mm MAF & K&N filter. Heres a web-site that shows CFM with different setups: http://www.shane.roberts.net/cai.htm

It's always been my understanding that the Manual should have the lower gear set it in, since most of the time the 5-6spds have a higher OD gear in it. I have 3.73 in mine, and wouldn't go any higher, I still do a lot of highway driving in my car. I know some people in this area that got more perf. from 4.10 4.30 in 5-Spd (Still good highway MPG) than the 3.55/3.73 in the same tranny.
|
oops.... sorry, that should have been, "I won't go any lower than 3.73"
