99-00 mods

Has anynone read this months mm&ff issue? There is a article on a 99 Gt that was equipped with several upgrades kn,mass air meter,tb and cat back exhaust with all this they were only able to get gains of around 10hp. I was the wondering how Saleen is able to get a 25hp gain with only kn,pulleys and cat back exhaust. I guess my question is, are the saleen claims alittle optimistic or is there something else done to these cars that Im unaware of. I recently purchased a 00 gt and am looking to upgrade it so I want the most bang for the buck.

They only other thing that I know they do is they replace the ECU. It does sound like a lot from just those mods. I can tell you that I drove both a '99 GT and and '99 S-281 and the S-281 felt much stonger. I don't know that it felt 25 hp stonger, but it was stonger.

I have a 99gt dead stock.it made 241 Rwhp & 284 rw torque. I installed a K&N, 2 charber Flowmasters, A cheap offroad h pipe. and a used C&L mass air meter that I'm not even sure if its desinged for, and picked up 19 rwhp (261.7), my peak torque decreased to 281.8 which really disappointed me, but I installed 4.10's and was told that gears have a negative effect on the dyno, don't no if its true, but it helped out my moral slightly. If anybody can verify this let me know, also is the c&l 96 calabration the same as what they are using for the 99, only paid $100 dollars for the meter and filter, If its not I should be able to get money back out of it as it retails for $299.

Most bang for your buck. Simple 3.73's. Do everthing else afterwards except maybe the K&N.

What brand of gears do you reccomend? Also how would 3.73 gearing effect the car on the freeway.

FMS (Ford MotorSport). The only effect it will have on highway driving is your R's will be up about 500 or so. You'll lose a little top end MPH, but do you really plan on doing 130. You'll also find if you are a 5 speed, you'll use fifth a little more in places you normally wouldn't have. You gas milaege might suffer a tiny bit, but with the extra push you'll get at the bottom end it is well worth it.

You will also have to get a speed compensator with the gears. There is no speedo gear to correct speedometer on the 99/00's. I use an Abbott ERA also I have head good things about the one from Sean Hyland.

You can get both the gears and speedo compensator from Houston Performance.

I totally agree....
A 3.73 gear change will give you a good bang for your buck and great seat of the pants acceleration. They also get you into the powerband faster...A great mod.. ;-)

Thanks for the input. I think Ill put that on top of my list. About how much will the speedo compensator set me back. Also how does this work?

RedGTvert 12-13-1999 11:00 PM

I use the Abbott ERA, Houston Performance sells it for $120.00. Whoever does you gear can probably install as well.

There is no speedo gear on 99/00's. I don't understand completely, but there is an electronic signal sent that the compensator changes the signal or pulses somehow.

If you ever go to a lerger set of tires and wheels, the compensator can correct as well.
