T-45 rebuild???

Can a Borg Warner T-45 transmission be altered/rebuilt to slam gears at 6500 rpm or is it hopeless and a swap to 3550 or TKO needed?

It can be rebuilt but not to slam gears. The trannys are weak and expensive to rebuild plus the shifter rails and shift forks can't take the abuse.I just spent $830.00 on a partial rebuild all the other stuff still looked new.Try the new G-Force 5spd or a Librety 5spd I hear they are pretty durable and can come in any gear selection imagineable.

The T-45 can be built to take a lot more abuse than when it was stock. The first problem with the T-45 BW is that the tolerances are very sloppy. The second problem is a combination of 2nd gear being too heavy and the syncros and blocker rings not being stout enough to speed that heavy 2nd gear up when slamming gears. The transmission shop that does all our AOD and gear work could make the fixes for about $1100 with the tranny out of the car. At that price range, it would probably be better to just go with the 3550. Also in the new FF&MM they do a T-56 swap into a Cobra http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif

Can the Tremec 3550 be bolted to the T-45 bell housing and can the same driveshaft be used?

The T-45 is all one piece including the bellhousing. You would need to use a Lakewood bellhousing to attach the 3550 to the 4.6. The Tremec set up also requires the the drive shaft be either longer or shorter (I can't remember which) by about 1". Don't forget to add in a new shifter too to the price of a conversion.

hmmm....maybe rebuilding the T-45 isn't too bad of an idea.

Thanks. I knew the T-56 required a shorter drive shaft but I was unaware the Tremec 3550 did also.
