HP boost for 2000 GT
 

I have a new 2000 GT and was wondering about mods that will give me some more HP? I heard that a bigger air intake and some exhaust mods are the way to go. would appreciate any feedback on this. I am also wondering about a performance chip, if anyone knows about these, I would be interested in finding out what the pros and cons of them are.

Opening up your intake and exhaust are always good ways to get some low cost horsepower. Stay away from any headers untill you get some heavy mods, but a cold air intake, H or X pipe, and a cat back exhaust will give you a nice boost in power while giving your car that classic muscle car sound.
If you are looking for more power so you can out run the next guy at the next redlight, the best bang for the buck mods you can do is put in a set of gears. Now what ratio depends on your trans. and how/where you drive, but usually 3:73's for a 5spd, and 4:10's for an auto work great.
A chip really won't do much untill you have some heavy mods like that from a power adder like a supercharger. It can help your shift points if you have an auto, but there are cheaper shift kits that can do that job just as well or better.

What is involved with putting on a set of new gears? Does the whole rear end get changed? And approx. how much is it to have it done?

Only 2 gears to replace. The Ring and Pinion. Cost for gears is $150-$200. I recommend to FRPP's. My installation was $150, but depending on your location, I've heard up to $400. You probably want to buy a shim kit as well. I don't remember the price for that, but $25-$40 seems right...

Diversified sells Ford Racing gears for $149. 734-459-0130. That's where I got mine, and the people are friendly and helpful as well.

A cat-back system will do nothing for you other than change the exhaust note. Go with an x or h pipe with cats. From what I've heard, the best mod is the gear change, 3.73 for 5 spd and 4.10 for autos.

Best thing to add power is an Offroad H or X, next would be a set of pullies. Don't bother with a CAI because for the most part you will see little to no gain and that has been proven on the dyno. Changing the catback is more of a personal preference you will not see very little power gain, the stock mufflers are quite adaquit. Gears do add a lot as well but not power just acceleration just be prepared to have better tires. At least this is what worked for me, you be the judge.
