If I remember corretly, your 96 should have 3.08 or if it had the up graded rear-end u might have a 3.27. If I'm wrong sorry. But I'm pretty sure I'm right.

Not disputing anyone here but I thought stock was 2.73 and the option was the 3.27

I have(I thought) the stock 2.73's and in 5th will cruise at 70-75 right around 2000rpm's.

I'll have to check my door tag agin... now i'm curious.
BTW stang1996gt those are nice numbers for your 96.

The general thought is 3.73's for a manual and 4.10's for an auto.

The mpg loss is negligable although it might be slightly different for an auto. A couple of guys around here with 5 speeds say they actually get better mileage around town as you're upshifting sooner and tend to cruise at a lower rpm range. Ask around but i've heard a lot of members with auto's going with 4.10's on their 99 and up GT's and they have completely streetable cars with decent mileage.

Hopefully next year i'll have 3.73's and a hiflow hpipe on my 96.

My 01 Cobra has 3:27 gears from the factory. I had 3:73 gears installed. Made a huge difference in the 1/4 mile times and the 0-60 mph times, lost 1 mpg hwy and 0 mpg in city driving. All 01 Cobras are 5 speed.
