Dumb shifter questions..
 

Since I've had the internals of my trans rebuilt once already from breaking the reverse fork, I'm starting to think about a shifter. Don't worry, the trans was covered (luckily) and it really wasn't my fault. Now on to my questions.

1. Will an aftermarket shifter really help curb overshifting and miss shifts, etc?

2. What brands are out there, as many as possible, and which one do you prefer and why.

3. I'm an old school guy, when I think shifters I think hurst. Anyone have experience with them in a mod car (does it even exist)?

YES a aftermarket shifter will make a huge difference.

I would suggest either the Steeda Tri-Axe or the Pro 5.0. The Hurst shifter sucks, IMO.

I agree 100% with Tireburner. I have the Steeda Tri-Ax and am very happy with it. It has adjustable mechanical stops that definitely prevent overshifting, and offset 2-3 shift that prevents misshifting, and 2 different lever positions for different length throws. You can yank on it like a gorilla and not hurt anything; I broke the gas pedal in my '00, but the tranny is still alive. :D

So a no-go for the Hurst. I'm starting to get up to speed on all the new car stuff. To put in the Steeda, I'm going to have to drop my trans again, aren't I?

You don't have to drop the trans. Just pull the shifter trim and boot and it's only a few bolts. Takes less than 1/2 hour to put in and adjust.

Thats a relief. Got any connections for the tri-ax?

I put a Tri-Ax in mine. I went and had it dynoed a few months back and the guy at the dyno said that out of all of the cars that he has dynoed, that mine shifted about the best and smoothest of all. I took it as a great compliment (since Steeda was not there to receive the award).

Go Tri-Ax and you can't go wrong.

I just installed the Pro 5.0 and it really makes an incredible difference.

One question I'd like to add is what level of noise is expected after installation? I'm getting som vibration sounds at high RPMs. Is that normal or might I need to tighten the stop bolts?

I believe Laurel Mountain Mustang was the cheapest when I got mine. Looks like they are selling them for $170 with free shipping right now.

As for the noise and vibration question, yes you should expect a little more than stock because the stock shifter has rubber insulators between the shift handle and shifter and the aftermarket ones don't because they make it feel soft and sloppy.
