Why does my car smell like roten eggs?

I wasnt sure where to post this but decided here since it deals with a mod. motor i hope you guys can help me out. Ok well ive been driving my moms car which is a 1996 mercury mystic or what ever and it has a 2.8 V6 DOHC motor in it. And ive been driving this and every so often it smells like rotten eggs, any idea of why it smells like this? It usually gets this smell after a hard acceleration. Thanks for the help.

90% of the time its a sign of the catalytic converters going bad, regardless of what type of vehicle it is. Have a muffler shop check it out for ya.

Deffinatly the Cats

My car does that and I just installed some BBK Cats. I thought it was normal. Should I call BBK?

thats what i was thinking that it was the cats gone bad. Ill definatly have it checked out soon not only because its probably not that great for the car but also becasue i hate the fact that the car smells like damn rotten eggs. even tho i wont have to deal with it to much longer since i get my 5.0 back in a week. thanks again for the help

try a new gas station the smell is sulfer and can be just a tank of bad gas

91PA5liter 12-24-2002 01:12 PM

i dont think its the gas because ive been getting this smell for over like a month and im sure there have been different brands of gas put into it. So im gonna go with it being that the cats have gone bad. thanks again

it is definetly the cats and no it`s not the gas all cats will do this when you run the engine hard they are flooded with excess fuel that the engine can not burn don`t worry about it.they all do it.

91PA5liter 12-24-2002 09:47 PM

so pretty much your sayin just dont run my moms car like its my mustang and thats about all i can do. The cats arnt bad there just getting over worked, and i cant really do squat about it other then not to punch it? or is it a combination of the cats going bad and being over worked and flooded as Badass said?

Badass_yellowGT 12-27-2002 10:45 PM

yea they are just flooded if the cat was going bad you can ususaly here it they make a rattle noise and and become more restrictive at higher rpms just take it easy
