exhaust set up
hi, i currently have an american thunder cat back...i like it alot....but i want a mid pipe and shortie headers
wat are the best shortie headers out there? frpp shorties? or what? also i want an off road pipe...i heard alot of good things about the mac prochamber off road..... is it that damn good? what other offroad pipes compare??? also...my tailpipes are starting to rust a lil......can i get the rust off and spray paint the tailpipes chrome??? any ideas on this situation? also will frpp shorties, prochamber (with mil's), and my current catback...perform well together??? |
I would go with BBK headers/Dr. Gas X-pipe.
|
I agree go with BBK headers. A Dr.Gas x-pipe or a BBK one. I wouldn't spray paint your tail pipes. where they chrome when you got them? You should just be able to take some rust rumover and some steel wool and sork with it and you should be fine.

I used the rust remover and steel wool technique on my 98 GT's tailpipes this past weekend, to remove the road grime and the little bit of surface rust. It worked like a charm and the pipes look very nice again.
I've seen painted exhaust pieces and in my opinion they will end up getting dinged and scratched and look worse than they are now. |
thanks
thanks to all...i will be doing the rust remover/ steel wool work to it....no, they weren't chrome to begin with....and i guess painting it would bring another set of problems
as for the exhaust ideas are bbk shortie headers superior to frpps??? i've heard alot of good about bbk... also...u say a bbk o/r x pipe??? or a dr. gas one? which is better? i guess i should stay bbk if i am doing the headers .. so bbk shorties, bbk o/r x pipe...and my current flow cat back will do the trick..... now for the next issue.....my tailpipes (which i installed pretty well) have always hung a lil different the left tailpipe is 1/2 inch lower hanging then the right.....it isnt' that noticable but i am pretty anal about my car....and i'm getting p o'd every time i see it.....can i do somethign with the hangers??? wat should i do.....etc? also....i assume i'd have a shoppe do the headers for me,,,,i will do the x pipe........and the mil's...they should be easy as well with shortie headers, o/r x and catback, do i need to get a custom chip? or that should not yet be done until more major mods up the road????? thanks again all adice is graciously appreciated |
1) I don't know how the bbk flow compared to the frpp ones. I have not herd too much about the frpp's.
2) I think someone told me once that the X-pipes are more louder than the H-pipes but the H-pipes give out more power, but I am not possitive, better ask around. 3) As for the tail pipe issue, Are your hangers the same size? If they arn't get the same size ones and if they are try to see if you can get a smaller one somewhere(maybee at the local parts store) to move the lower one up to the same height as the other. 4) I don't know much about chips, but I plan on looking into them when I get my 99 stang. |
The BBK's may give slightly more power than the Ford, but will also stay better lookin for longer and probably fit up better. As far as x-pipes/h-pipes, h-pipes have more of a muscle car sound, and x=pipes sound smoother/different and offer a little more (usually) gains than an H-pipe, but are usually more expensive. For hte hanger, maybe try dropping the lower hanging tailpipe and bending the hanger slightly so it'll pickup. Mine did that, it also stuck out farther on one side so I cut one shorter, then eventually took them off and went wiht turndowns. If I were putting on all new exhaust, I'd go with BBK full-length headers, BBK or Dr. Gas X, Bassani/magnaflow/flowmaster (not sure which one) w/turndowns.

I agree w/ 429 in that long tubes are the way to go on a 4.6. The shorts will not pick up any real power on an NA engine. Long tubes are worth quite a bit of torque and HP.
