I'm in hell, how can this be possible for a stock gear???

Took my 96 gt in today for 3:73 gears, the gears have never been touched the car was stock when i bought it last year and the guy calls me and says theres already 3:27 gears in here if you wanna feel anything go 4:10 plus he said they had to rebuild the posi unit and put in new bearings so from $450 I have to pay $700 cause i'm too much of a pussweed to say no so now i'm gonna have mega crappy gas milage and less traction. With the "3:27" in there already i still really could spin the tires and i'm never gonan supercharge it and i dont drive freeway so with 4:10 i lose alot on the high end like if i'm crusin 55 and a camaro pulls up and we both punch it i wont have much left right? damn it damn it damn it:mad:  :( :( :( :(

So we buy gears to "feel something?", I thought it was for performance...

4:10s aren't bad for an auto, but daily drivability and gas mileage will be effected.

I would have sticked with 3.73s with a chip for more aggressive shifts and speedo compensation....

I've never heard of anyone with 4.10's complain....

Supposed to say I couldnt spin the tires thats proberly because the limited slip was dead but now everything is brand new back there he said, 4:10's and a rebuild posi, to break it in it says to stay below 45 for 100 miles and stay off the expressway for 300 miles, thats gonna suck i hate people passin me all the time:mad:

I don't think I've ever seen such an angry reaction to a performance mod...:D

Have fun!

Hehe I know I know but a stock 96 gt auto is supposed to be a 2:73 gear or a 3:08 so I've been told and I was gonna do 3:73 and everything was gonna be cool but I somehow have a 3:27 and It was still slow so I guess 4:10 it is, its sitting in the garage now so after I break it in I will open it up and see what up. Bye Bye Bye gas mileage:(

sleeper_stang_2000 05-14-2003 09:40 AM

I had 4.10's in mine and I would run out of 3rd on the quarter and that was without the nitrous. I put back in the stock gears and as you can see I'm running mid 12's all day long. Spinning tires is a BAD thing and the first thing you should do is get a pair of drag radials. Doesn't make sense to put more power in the rear if you can't keep control of your traction.

I could barely spin the tires with 3:27 in with an automatic, I dont plan to put the pedal to the floor I just need some balls.

surfbeast 05-14-2003 02:00 PM

First of all stock gears for the automatic were 3:27's the stick came with 2:72 or 3:08 as an option. If you are wanting to keep up with a camaro at highway speeds the 3:73 or 4:10's won't help. Unless the camaro is a V 6. Where the gears will help is from red light to red light where most "racing" ( a dirty word) takes place. The gas mailage won't be noticed after the first time you mash the gas from a stop and you feel the added acceleration! I wish I had gone 4:10's! And your rear end should be alot stronger now. SPIN AWAY!!:D

As for losing mpg I only lost 1mpg city and 2 mpg highway

96_4.6 05-14-2003 03:58 PM

So I'm thinking 4:10's would wreck your gas mileage at high speeds say 70 and over correct? I wish I would have gone with 3:73 anyone wanna trade??? hehe

Badass_yellowGT 05-14-2003 06:25 PM

for the price you paid for the new gears and rebuilt posi you could have bought a complete new axle assembled with the gears you wanted for under $800.00

96_4.6 05-14-2003 08:15 PM

Well yea I paid $689 with new bearings and install though

Red Mustang Gt 46 05-15-2003 06:34 PM

Nothing wrong with 4:10's. Don't knock 'em till you try 'em.

96_4.6 05-15-2003 07:04 PM

So how many more rpms is a 4:10 compared to a 3:27, i'm tryin to figure that thing out how to find out but anyone know, :)

mellow98cobra 05-15-2003 08:16 PM

i have 410's in mine and i am turning 3000 rpms at 80 mph.......but i am also looking in to a tremic 6 speed to fix that problem and still keep my power.....

96_4.6 05-15-2003 09:13 PM

Thats also a 98 cobra 5 speed compared to a 96 gt automatic, I should have got 3:73's

Badass_yellowGT 05-15-2003 09:39 PM

the shortest gear i would ever put in a 5 speed is the new 3:90 they are making for the 8.8

96_4.6 05-16-2003 12:50 AM

Yea thats perfect, I should have waited:mad:

Pass the Cheese with all this Whine!

Man, someone please pass the cheese with all the whine in this posting! You're probably gonna love the 4.10's once you're able to stand on them, everyone who has a V8 Mustang has it really for one reason and that is to go FAST and those 4.10's are gonna make for a much more responsive car, so quit your b*tchin' and let us know how you like them once they're broken in! Have fun with them! If you come back and complain that they make your car too quick and you're smoking your tires and it's gonna cost you too much money in tires we're all gonna give you a whoopin'!
