3.73 gears
I have the factory 3.27 gears in my 03 GT (5 speed). I am wanting to go with a 3.73 setup. What would be the difference in rpms in 5th gear at 55 mph? 65 mph? 75 mph? Will it make my car feel like it is in the powerband longer moreso than with the 3.27 gears? Also will it make my 1st gear super low? Any feedback is much appreciated.

Not sure about the rpms but I don't think you will notice any BIG difference at all.

Not sure about the 3.73s, but with my 4.10s, I'm around 3200rpms@ 75 . I still get over 20 mpg on the hwy. First gear won't be real low with 3.73s.You will notice a difference over the 3.27s, but ,personally, I like the 4.10 gear better.

I know there's an equation somewhere that will tell you all that, I just can't remember what it is. At 80 mph, I'm running around 2900 rpms...not sure about the other speeds. I rarely ever used first gear, unless I'm on a hill or wanting to get going. I get 300+ miles to the tank, too, so I'm above 20mpg. However, I drive 70 miles/day on the interstate and my speedometer is a little off. It says I'm doing about 7-10 mph over what I'm actually going, so it throws off my odometer. You'll notice some difference, but nothing real big. My dad has 3.55 in his and I can tell a difference b/w the two, but it's minimal.

It is about a 400 rpm increase from 3:23's to 3:73's. At 70 mph your will be at 2200 rpm as opposed to 1800. And YES you do feel more pull as compared to stock. 1st gear isnt as bad as you think it will be, it wont act like a granny gear. My fuel mileage dropped in town but on highway i get 27 mpg. Hope that helps.

3:73's are perfect for the SOHC4.6...You will notice a difference.

Hey guys! All the answers are right here at your finger tips. Go to the site map and click on "Analyzer". Scroll down to the bottom. You can pick any combo of gear ratios and tire diameter you want and you will get all the data that you need and then some.
Don't forget, the higher the gear ratio number, the higher the rpm's you will run and the more fuel you will comsume. The guys that are reporting same fuel economy are getting these results because they are probably using a higher gear more often then they were before because the car pulls better than with stock gears. So, overall, they must still be running at about the same average RPMs. Also, your top speed will decrease almost 20 mph from stock gears to 4.10s if you care. This might be an issue if you are a bank robber and are planning to outrun the law. |
With 4.10s I only lost 1 mpg on average. Also, if you have a pretty much stock motor, your top speed will increase with 4.10s, not decrease because it will put you in the power band in 5th. I think 3.73s are a little weak for '99+ cars - if you look at where they make peak power the 4.10 is the best gear for acceleration. 3.73s are more optimal for a fairly stock '96-98 and 5.0s because they make peak power lower in the rev range.

I have to agree with some what was said. My 2002 GT pulls way better up top. My 95 (with 3.73's) pulls hard but starts to die out between 4500 and 5000 RPM. My 2002 GT, is still gaining power at 4500 RPM. Unless you're going to be doing a lot of highway miles, I'd go 4.10's.
I noticed an increase in fuel economy in town with 3.73's in my 95. Obviously highway mileage suffered some. |

I say if your looking for the bang for thebuck go with 4.10s I would have been kicking myself if I went with 3.73s if I was not going to spray I would have gone with 4.30s
