Default rear gear ??

i just bought myself an 89 Coupe 5.0 5spd. this is the first 5spd car ive had that i'm actually gonna modify and it already has a complete exhaust, so i want to put some better gears in it. im stuck between 3.55's and 3.73's, and i know alot of ppl recommend 3.55's with a 5spd, but i'd just like to hear some of your opinions on the matter.

I have 3.73's and their great. I have never driven a car with 3.55's, so I have no basis for comparison.

I've had both, 3.55's in a 90 GT and currently have 3.73 in my 93 Cobra and I definitly like the 3.73's better their really isn't that much difference at 65mph roughly 300 rpms. The 3.73's at the track help a ton leaving the line with slicks, if that is a goal of yours in the future, hope this helps.

I put 3:55's in the 89 about 2years ago. I thought those would be perfect for a street car and they made a BIG difference in the performance. I still like em but my youngest son has 3:73's in the green thing and there's even mo-bettah stuff in them. If I had it to do over, I'd do 3:73's in anything I put gears in.

I have had my 3.73's for a month now and so far I really like them. The change in rpm at highway speeds wasnt nearly as bad as I thought it would be. If your not gonna do much racing go with the 3.73's if you are gonna race it you may want to look at 4.10's especially if your motor mods move your torque and hp band up into the higher rpm's.

Dude, I do massive highway driving all the time and I run 3.73's. I have a carb and I get ~20 mpg hwy slightly underjetted but with a 95 power valve. If I had to do it all over again, then I would hit 4.11's. I pull...if I remember correctly off the top of my head: 65mph at 2000 in 5th with my 3.73's .

My first stang must have had 4.11's or 4.30's in it cause it pulled like 3500k rpms at 85 (I always assumed that that was what mustangs felt like and I was in for a surprise when I got a 3.08 equipped car, what a slothly feeling ride). What a difference. With FI, I got 24 mpg hwy. I could chirp the tires easily in 2nd.
