Question rear main seal

What is the rear main seal. I hear people talking about checking leaks on older engines, and they always say to check it. Just wondering what it is.

the rear main seal is the seal located at the back of the engine which keeps the oil in. the crank runs through it they usualy don`t go but is still good to check it every once in a while .to get a good look at it or to replace it you will have to unbolt the tranny and remove the flywheel to get acces to it i`d say replace it if you upgrade your clutch definetly not hard to do if you don`t have any oil puddles on the ground or bad clutch slippage you should be good
