Rear wheel bearings?

I know these have been a problem on the 99/00 GTs. There is a loud, strange rub/vibration in the rear end when I'm going backwards. Should I be worried that my bearings are shot? The car has over 20k miles now.

The problem associated with the rear ends for our cars is the carrier bearings being bad. They get pitted real easy. I never noticed any noise but when I had the gears changed out they were obviously scored and needed to be changed out.

Thanks. I'll have the dealer look at them when I get the car in for the emergency brake recall. At least it gets on the record. The rub/vibration wasn't there this morning. I hope it's not one of these mysterious things that can't be reproduced when the dealer has it.

Mine became noticeably noisy after about 15K. Didn't notice the noise in reverse but it sure was there while going forward and noticeable at all speeds. It had a rubbing or grinding-like sound.

I had the same problem. My carrier bearings were shot and made a heck of a noise. I had them changed when my gears were installed.

Just got mine out of the shop last Tuesday. I have been hearing the noise for a long time. Of Course the dealer "Can't reprodude customers complaint." So when I take it back for the recall I will gladly take the Service manager for a ride.

I too hear these grinding rubbing noises especially at
slow speed, forward, especially when turning into
driveways, or just coming down the hill in apt complex,
all related?

Maybe... I have my old barings sitting right here in front of me. After 10K the wear is visible, but near to the point of being severe. I would guess that they are good to at least 50K. Ford should of done better, but at least it isn't too much of a pain to swap out, especially if you are changing gears.

Darn TIMKEN...

If it had not been for the roar in the rear of my car, I would not have my 3.73s today. After I found out what the problem was I decided to go ahead with the gears while they had the chunk out. I hope the new ones last longer. The car had 36,000 miles when I changed them. It now has 40,000.

King Snake, did you have the dealer do the work? If so, how much did they stick you up for? Thanks.
