Default too many RPMS?

i just overevved the he** out of my motor. to like 6750 (stock tach) it didnt seem like i hit a rev limiter though (which i thought was at 6250). i just hope i didnt effect my motor at all. it still runs fine and oil pressure is still where it usually is.

why didnt i hit the rev limiter, and what could happen because of this?

thanks,
adam

adam

Default Been there...

Don't worry about it. I have done the same thing a hundred times. I have looked down while spinning in 1st and been way over 6K many times. I know my tach is off by at least 500 rpm. I saw the real rpms while getting an emmissions test and looking at the dash simultaneously.

Also, the stock tach is at it's worst (inaccurate) when it's spiked quickly. When throwing revs, it is often as much as 1500 rpms off.

Take care,
-Chris

If Im not mistaken on this, Ford has built into the computer what they call a rev limiter. at the 6000ish rpm range I believe it starts shutting off the injectors.

Im not certain about this however I think my good cyberbuddy JimBerg was telling me about it one time... Jim?

Yes, that is correct. That's what he was asking in the beginning of this thread. The problem is that his true rpms, which the limiter refers to, were much lower than what the tach said, so he was concerned that perhaps his limiter wasn't working, when in fact it's the factory tach that is off.

Take care,
-Chris

chris,

is there any way to make the stock tach more accurate? or is there an aftermarket tach that replaces the stock one. im trying to keep my mustang stock looking yet pretty powerful on the street. if not, i can deal with it.

thanks,
adam

Boy, that's a good question. I would think that someone somewhere makes gauges that fit into the stock location, but I don't know of any off the top. The stock tach is pretty much junk, and that can't be changed. You could always add a mini tach to the steering column, that could be easily removed without any permenant damage. Just a thought.

Good luck!

Take care,
-Chris
